The Polity of the Athenians and the Lacedaemonians by Xenophon. Translation by H. G. Dakyns. Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and was exiled from Athens. Sparta gave him land and property in Scillus, where he lived for many years before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth. He died in 354 B.C. The Polity of the Lacedaemonians talks about the laws and institutions created by Lycurgus, which train and develop Spartan citizens from birth to old age.

This work is a new critical text of the Constitution of the Lacedaemonians, written in the fourth century B.C. by Xenophon of Athens, based upon collations of the two best manuscript witnesses presently extant. Each page of Greek text is faced with an idiomatic English translation, and the author provides a collation of the text excerpts made by the Byzantine scholar Joannes Stobaeus, and a new translation of Plutarch's Life of Lycurgus, which serves as a helpful commentary to Xenophon's work.

Xenophon S Sparta written by Gerald Proietti and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987 with Literary Criticism categories.

Xenophon is usually believed to have written his Hellenica as a general ''history of his own times'' in Greece, and is criticized for his disproportionately close attention to Spartan affairs and his apparent bias in favour of the Spartans. But his treatment of Sparta is much more coherent and purposive than has been noticed; and knowing the cirumstances of his life, we should consider that there were ample reasons of prudence (at least) for him to have written with much circumspection about Sparta and especially about Agesilaus and Agesilaus' friends. This methodical interpretative study of Lysander in the Hellenica as well as of the Polity of the Lacedaemonians demonstrates that Xenophon wrote aobut this city - famous for the communal life of its citizens - with critical and philosophic intent. As a case study in reading classical history, it might signal the need for a complete reevaluation of other historians as well.

Most of what is known of the ancient world comes from the accounts of antiquity's own historians. Ancient history is the aggregate of past events from the beginning of writing and recorded human history and extending as far as post-classical history. Historians have two major ways of understanding the ancient world: archaeology and the study of source texts. Primary sources are those sources closest to the origin of the information or idea under study. Some of the more notable ancient writers include Herodotus, Thucydides, Arrian, Plutarch, Polybius, Livy, Josephus, Suetonius, and Tacitus. This three-volume edition presents exactly such primary sources of classical antiquity historians. This volume contents: 1. Thucydides: The History of the Peloponnesian War 2. Herodotus: The Histories by Herodotus 3. Xenophon: Anabasis 4. Xenophon: The Polity of the Athenians and the Lacedaemonians 5. Polybius: The Histories of Polybius, in 2 vol. 6. Plutarch: Lives of the noble Grecians and Romans by Plutarch Lives: A.H. Clough 7. Strabo: The Geography of Strabo, in 3 vol.
