Both the great cities studied in this book are renowned for their imposing streets and buildings, their cultural and political vitality and their cosmopolitan lifestyles, but just outside their centres are neighbourhoods where ordinairy people have their homes, often living in poverty and sometimes in squalor. Two such neighbourhoods were Stockwell in London and Folie-Mericourt in Paris, and are the tale of this 'tale of two cities' told by social researchers. The local studies are set in their broader metropolitan and national contexts, including an examination of changes over time in income patterns in France and Britain and in housing policies in the metropolitan regions. This illuminates the effects of different social policies adopted by Britain and France, Paris and London, to help poor and disadvantaged families. This book was first published in 1981.

Calcutta Poor written by Frederic C. Thomas and has been published by M E Sharpe Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Social Science categories.

Calcutta is notorious for its pavement dwellers, street children, and scavengers that have become a portrait of the worst sort of human degradation. In this illuminating critique, Thomas investigates the standard solutions - improved housing, increased job creation, and intervention of social services agencies - only to come to the conclusion that such initiatives have little effect on the inherent nature of the problem of poverty. Based on historical and anthropological findings, and the author's visits to the slums of Calcutta, what becomes clear is that even in the midst of great poverty, there is a nobility of character, a vitality of ethnic and cultural ties, and an energy that bring out inventiveness and ingenuity in the lives of the poor. If Calcutta's poverty is not to be an intractable problem, these internal forces must be awakened to generate solutions. Illustrated with stunning photographs, Thomas's reflections provide new insight into an age-old problem.

Down And Out In Saigon written by Haydon Cherry and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-28 with Poor categories.

A moving portrait of the lives of six poor city-dwellers, set in early twentieth century colonial Saigon Historian Haydon Cherry offers the first comprehensive social history of the urban poor of colonial French Saigon by following the lives of six individuals--a prostitute, a Chinese laborer, a rickshaw puller, an orphan, an incurable invalid, and a destitute Frenchman--and how they navigated the ups and downs of the regional rice trade and the institutions of French colonial rule in the first half of the twentieth century. "Down and Out in Saigon is marked by three qualities that endow it with unusual value: the originality of its subject matter, as the first and only history of colonial Saigon's poor population, the excellence of its research, and Cherry's elegant prose."--Peter B. Zinoman, University of California, Berkeley "This is more than a corrective of revolutionary historiography--it is a tour de force that brings marginal and forgotten lives into the story of modern Vietnamese history."--Charles Keith, author of Catholic Vietnam: A Church from Empire to Nation

The plight of the urban poor in Mexico has changed little since World War II, despite the country's impressive rate of economic growth. Susan Eckstein considers how market forces and state policies that were ostensibly designed to help the poor have served to maintain their poverty. She draws on intensive research in a center city slum, a squatter settlement, and a low-cost housing development. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Memoirs of a Poor City Boy: From Penniless Youth to Chemist and Doctor is the fascinating life story of George Francis Kamen. Amidst a background of poverty, George obtained a coveted college education and medical training. Always the pragmatist, George earned a degree in chemistry to back up his medical education. He went on to conduct groundbreaking research in the treatment of multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases with hydrocortisone injections and a salt-free, low-fat diet: The Kamen Diet. The author practiced medicine at a time when medical research sometimes was conducted with only a verbal agreement between patients and doctors. His treatments with hydrocortisone injections and The Kamen Diet also were found to be beneficial in patients with diabetes and cirrhosis of the liver. Published articles on Dr. Kamen's research with acrolein ranged from the effects of shock associated with burns (1943) to Mengo-Semliki virus immunity (1961), some of the earliest research on retroviruses. Dr. Kamen is listed in Leaders in American Science (1960) for his work on Multiple Sclerosis. Now retired and living in Sarasota, Florida, Dr. Kamen hopes that by publishing his memoirs, readers might find the courage and determination to realize their own dreams against any odds.
