Excerpt from The Poor Man's Friend: An Address to the Industrious and Manufacturing Part of Great Britain I had lately a book given me, laid to be written by one Thomas Paine, in two parts, at a reduced 1)uoc. My neighbour who made mea prefent of the copy, tbld me, that it would clearly prove to me that I was a {fate and a; beggar; that we had no confli'tution; and that, if I wil led it, 1 might be equal to any man in the country. I re plied to him, that I willed it with all my heart, but that I did nor think I was a {lave or a beggar; and, however felt} ilb it might be, I fecretly thought of my hundred pounds. I have fince read the book with great attention; and tho'ugh there are many parts of it whereof I cannot dif* cover the meaning, yet, as far as I am able, I Will pom: out the con'feque'nces, civil, moral, and religions, of his fchemes; which, I think, he has forgotten to do. Debating England S Aristocracy In The 1790s written by Amanda Goodrich and has been published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Aristocracy (Social class) categories.

The 1790s saw a lively `French Revolution Debate' in England, with much space and intellectual energy, in classic texts by men such as Burke and Paine, and ensuing pamphlet literature, devoted characterisations and representations of the aristocracy; yet this is the first full-scale survey of the subject. Dr Goodrich takes a fresh approach to the topic, illustrating the complexities of the bitter battle fought out in such texts between radicals and loyalists, and highlighting the persistent viciousness and vitriol of a radical anti-aristocratic rhetoric. However, she demonstrates that the loyalist response contained the more innovative campaign, bringing out in particular the development of a commercial loyalism which promoted a new model of society with a modern aristocracy and an open elite; what emerges are English defences of aristocracy which are not simply reducible to ideas of an ancien régime or a Gothic institution.

The responses of British people to the French Revolution has recently received considerable attention from historians. British commentators often expressed a sense of the novelty and scale of European wars which followed, yet their views on this conflict have not yet attracted such thorough examination. This book offers a wide-ranging exploration of the attitudes of various groups of British people to the conflict during the 1790’s: the Government, their supporters and their opponents inside and outside Parliament, women, churchmen, and the broad mass of British public opinion. It presents the debate in England and Scotland provoked by the war both as the sequel to the French Revolution and as a distinct debate in itself. Emma Vincent Macleod argues that contemporaries saw this conflict as one of the first since the wars of religion to be significantly shaped by ideological hostility rather than solely by a struggle over strategic interests.
