This book investigates the evolution of economic discourse from fully specialised texts towards popularisation. Popularising texts on economics and business-related matters has hitherto been a neglected and under-explored area of enquiry, and yet it deserves attention and study on account of the new fascinating insights it offers into specialised language and discourse. The present book explores this under-researched area via the qualitative analysis of a modern genre, namely newspapers on the web. In particular, it scrutinises authentic extracts principally drawn from The Guardian Online in order to show, on the one hand, the popularising effect of the Internet on business and economic discourse, and, on the other hand, the realistic vocabulary currently used in economic and professional jargon. The introductory chapter discusses the popularisation of specialised text at large and of new media discourse in particular. It describes this phenomenon as a ‘reformulation process’ whereby specialised knowledge is transformed into everyday or lay knowledge, and also as a ‘recontextualisation process’ whereby popularisation discourse is adapted to the appropriateness conditions of the new genres and to the constraints of the media employed. Popularisation, it is claimed, implies relevant changes not only in terms of terminological simplifications and adaptations to the public’s prior knowledge, but also in terms of the roles undertaken by the participants in the communicative event. The remaining chapters are organised into thematic units whose topics range from global economy, economic growth, and financial crisis to business management, employment, and sales. This part provides an in-depth investigation of various topics related to the economics and business worlds, combined with systematic explanations of linguistic phenomena at various language levels, from morphology to syntax, semantics, and the lexicon. In this book, the lexicon of ESP is offered in a fresh, less formal style, which will attract younger and non-expert readers alongside experts and professionals. The book is of considerable interest to students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, lecturers, professors, entrepreneurs, specialists, and to those scholars who investigate ESP and its popularisation.

This book was born out of the idea that domain-specific knowledge has two major dimensions, since, on the one hand, peer-to-peer communication is primarily intended to further research within specific disciplines, while, on the other, domain-external, asymmetric communication of ‘filtered’ knowledge caters to different types of lay-audiences. Collectively, the chapters in the volume take the reader on a journey through knowledge communication and knowledge (re)presentation strategies that are able to successfully disseminate and communicate. The domains under scrutiny are medicine and health, corporate communication, cultural heritage and tourism. A number of issues are addressed at the interface of corpus linguistics, genre studies and multimodal analysis. The variety of questions posed and methods used to explore corpus data will contribute to further debate among scholars in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, multimodality, media studies and computer-mediated communication.

The business of journalism is widely held to be in a terminal crisis today, in particular because the rise of the internet has drained audience attention and advertising revenue away from existing media platforms. This book, the first systematic international overview of how the news industry is dealing with current changes, counters such simplistic predictions of the supposedly technologically determined death of the news industry. It offers instead nuanced scrutiny of the threats and opportunities facing legacy news organisations across the world in countries as diverse as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Finland, Brazil, and India as they transition to an increasingly convergent media landscape.

Science And The Media written by Donald Kennedy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Communication of technical information categories.

How science and technology are covered by the media is a central factor in scientific illiteracy. Journalists value timeliness, speed, simplicity, and clarity. Yet stories about science and technology may be long-building, complex, and without dramatic, time-pegged events. The need to grab and hold attention, to write tight stories or produce short segments, can come at the cost of context and nuance. One observer, noting journalism's preference for attention-grabbing, conflict-driven events, has joked that reporters two thousand years ago would have covered the heck out of the crucifixion - and missed Christianity. As the world grows more complex, there is an increasing need for citizens to understand the scientific and technological dimensions of daily news events. Journalists play a critical role in helping readers, listeners, and viewers appreciate the science underlying major policy choices. And scientists, in turn, must effectively communicate to the public, especially through the media. We hope that the essays gathered in this volume will generate a broader understanding of the intertwined roles of the media and the scientific and technical community in helping to ensure a well-informed public.

What is Digital Journalism Studies? delves into the technologies, platforms, and audience relations that constitute digital journalism studies’ central objects of study, outlining its principal theories, the research methods being developed, its normative underpinnings, and possible futures for the academic field. The book argues that digital journalism studies is much more than the study of journalism produced, distributed, and consumed with the aid of digital technologies. Rather, the scholarly field of digital journalism studies is built on questions that disrupt much of what previously was taken for granted concerning media, journalism, and public spheres, asking questions like: What is a news organisation? To what degree has news become separated from journalism? What roles do platform companies and emerging technologies play in the production, distribution, and consumption of news and journalism? The book reviews the research into these questions and argues that digital journalism studies constitutes a cross-disciplinary field that does not focus on journalism solely from the traditions of journalism studies, but is open to research from and conversations with related fields. This is a timely overview of an increasingly prominent field of media studies that will be of particular interest to academics, researchers, and students of journalism and communication.
