Placing Faces written by Gill Perry and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-26 with Art categories.

This book explores the rich but understudied relationship between English country houses and the portraits they contain. It features essays by well-known scholars such as Alison Yarrington, Gill Perry, Kate Retford, Harriet Guest, Emma Barker and Desmond Shawe-Taylor. Works discussed include grand portraits, intimate pastels and imposing sculptures. Moving between residences as diverse as Stowe, Althorp Park, the Vache, Chatsworth, Knole and Windsor Castle, it unpicks the significance of various spaces – the closet, the gallery, the library – and the ways in which portraiture interacted with those environments. It explores questions around gender, investigating narratives of family and kinship in portraits of women as wives and daughters, but also as mistresses and celebrities. It also interrogates representations of military heroes in order to explore the wider, complex ties between these families, their houses, and imperial conflict. This book will be essential reading for all those interested in eighteenth-century studies, especially for those studying portraiture and country houses.

In 15th century Florence, five women and a legendary artist weave together a dangerous plot that could bring peace - or get them all killed. Seeking to wrest power from the Medici, members of the Pazzi family slay the beloved Giuliano. But Lorenzo de' Medici survives the attack and seeks revenge on everyone involved, plunging the city into murderous chaos. Bodies are dragged through the streets, and no one is safe. Five women steal away to a church to ply their craft in secret. Viviana, Fiammetta, Isabetta, Natasia and Mattea are painters, not allowed to be public with their skill but freed from the restrictions in their lives by their art. When a sixth member of their group, Lapaccia, goes missing and is rumored to have stolen a much sought-after painting before she vanished, the women must venture out into the dangerous streets to find their friend. They will have help from one of the most renowned painters of their era: the peaceful and kind Leonardo da Vinci. It is under his tutelage that they flourish as artists and with his access that they infiltrate some of the highest, most secretive places in Florence, unraveling one conspiracy as they build another in its place. Vibrant and absorbing, Portrait Of A Conspiracy is the first novel in Donna Russo Morin's Da Vinci's Disciples series.

This is a new translation from the original Russian manuscript of Gogol's famous story The Portrait (Портрет). This edition contains an Afterword by the Translator, a timeline of Gogol's life and works and an Index of Gogol's individual works. First Published in the collection Arabesques in 1835, The Portrait is one of Gogol's most supernatural works, with a tragic moral. Oscar Wilde's philosophic novel is templated off of this work, and has a similar point. "The Portrait" is the story of the artist Andrey Petrovich Chartkov, who stumbles upon a frighteningly lifelike portrait in an art shop and is compelled to buy it. The painting is magical and presents him with a dilemma - to struggle to make his own way in the world on the basis of his own talents, or to accept the magical painting's help to guarantee riches and fame. He chooses to become rich and famous, but when he comes across a portrait by another artist that is "pure, flawless, beautiful as a bride", he realises that he has made the wrong choice and he falls ill and dies of a fever. It is a re-telling of a Ukrainian fairy tale.

Every day, researchers from MIT's Materials Science Department stride past a portrait of Vannevar Bush that hangs on a curious display panel in the lobby of building 13, as they hurry to and from their laboratories. A Portrait, Extended is an architectural and photographic intervention that aims to raise awareness and promote dialogue, to keep us conscious of the ethical issues surrounding technological production. The project raises many issues while it encourages its audience - primarily researchers in materials science - to come to terms with their involvement in the history of government funded research, and to reconsider the quintessential ethical dilemma of technological production. To promote reflect ion on these issues, three ancillary displays were placed in the lobby of the Vannevar Bush Building (building 13) from May 2 to June 2 1999. These additional displays, designed to mimic the visual language of the permanent display, append the symbolic layers of the original unit and its portrayal of Vannevar Bush.

Ken Ohara written by Ken Ohara and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Photography categories.

Since the late 1960s, photographer Ken Ohara has concentrated his efforts on expanding the limited conventions for the human portrait. At the age of twenty, Ohara moved from Tokyo to New York in 1962. Eight years later he published his extraordinary first book ONE, which consisted of a series of uniformly tight close-ups of a multitude of diverse faces that he photographed on the streets of New York. A portion of this project was first exhibited at MoMA in 1974 in New York. Over the next thirty years, Ohara has continued his portrait studies, all the while exploring a variety of means to alter the interaction between photographer, subject, and the resulting portrait image. This retrospective book and exhibition considers for the first time Ohara's seven major projects that systematically explore a variety of elements that shape and reshape the possibilities of photographic portraiture. Ohara's series present striking results from his different approaches to defining the character of the portrait transaction - ranging from radical close-ups of hundreds of anonymous faces, to one extended self-portrait comprised of the photographer's self-exposure made every minute for a period of 24 hours, to journals composed systematically of one view looking outward and a second view including the photographer's image for each day of a year that the photographer compiled in the compressed format of the leporello or folded book. Also included in this retrospective are a collaborative series of photographs made by others for Ohara, and a more recent series of 100 portraits in which each "sitting" was deliberately designed to register the subject's dynamic contribution by lasting an hour. As photographic historian and guest curator Sally Stein proposes, in its rigorously varied breadth the work of Ken Ohara not only offers one of the most sustained examinations of space and time in photographic portraiture but also provokes a rethinking of the conventional limits of photographic depiction. Co-published with Museum Folkwang, Essen.

The Amistad incident, one of the few successful ship revolts in the history of enslavement, has been discussed by historians for decades, even becoming the subject of a Steven Spielberg film in 1997, which brought the story to wide audiences. But, while historians have examined the Amistad case for its role in the long history of the Atlantic, the United States and slavery, there is an oil on canvas painting of one man, Cinqué, at the center of this story, an image so crucial to the continual retelling and memorialization of the Amistad story, it is difficult to think about the Amistad and not think of this image. Visual and material culture about the Amistad in the form of paintings, prints, monuments, memorials, museum exhibits, quilts and banners, began production in the late summer of 1839 and has not yet ceased. Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué is the first book to survey in total these Amistad inspired images and related objects, and to find in them shared ideals and cultural creations, but also divergent applications of the story based on intended audience and local context. Tracing the revolutionary creation of what art historian Stephen Eisenman calls “a highly individualized, noble portrait of an African man,” Art of the Amistad and The Portrait of Cinqué is built around visual and material culture, and thus does not use images merely as illustration, but tells its story through the wide range of images and materials presented. While the Portrait of Cinqué seems to sit quietly behind Plexiglass at a local history museum, the impact of this 175-year old painting is palpable; very few portraits from the 19th century—let alone a portrait of a black man—remain a relevant part of culture as the Portrait of Cinqué continues to be today. Art of the Amistad the Portrait of Cinqué is about the art and artifacts that continue to inform and inspire our understanding of transatlantic history—a journey 175 years in the making.
