Flannery attempted to include all documents of general interest that form part of the postconciliar process—documents which might be described as organically linked with the conciliar process. This is the translation used in The Catechism of the Catholic Church and the text that both students of the Council and students of the Catechism will want for the complete reference of the Council and its decisions. Special features of the study edition: Larger page size, with larger print and more generous margins Focus questions after each Council document help the reader comprehend the main points Creative questions assist the reader in applying the content of the Council documents to personal experience or to future development in the Church

Why Priests written by Paul Josef Cordes and has been published by Scepter Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Religion categories.

When--as we often hear--there are too few priests, can and should lay people assume some part of the priestly ministry? And when all men and women have equal dignity in the eyes of God, is it not also time to organize parishes democratically? Also, why does the Church need priests at all?Just in time for the "Year for Priests," Paul Josef Cardinal Cordes, the president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum and a close friend of Pope Benedict XVI, offers a wide-ranging view of the priesthood which draws on the Holy Father's thinking and scholarship over a period of fifty years. The book covers four major themes: origins of priesthood, development through the history of the Church, the limitations and problems faced by priests, and finally, personal faith and the Church's salvific means. Through these reflections the Cardinal offers a deeper understanding of the Catholic priesthood which is sure to be helpful for the priest and his parish, the seminarian and his ambience, as well as all those interested in the priestly ministry and the Church's decision-making process.

Evolving Visions of the Priesthood traces the movement of the Church in the United States during the first forty years of the implementation of Vatican II. This research gives the U.S. Church a good picture of itself and its struggles during the post-conciliar period. These studies are important for what they tell us of priests who were already ministering the theology of the Council, at the time of the Council, and also consider those priests ordained more recently and their perspectives on Vatican II. How the different groups of priests perceive each other in their respective desires to be faithful to God offers the reader insight into today's presbyterate. By following what has been happening we get a glimpse of what the future holds. Given the struggles of the scandals recently confronting the Church, the studies also offer indications of why the particular problems arose so suddenly and why they were so related to a given time frame. Chapters are The American Priesthood After the 1960s," *Characteristics of Priests in 2001, - *The Shifting Emphasis in Ecclesiology, - *The New Priests, - *Issues and Needs Felt by Priests, - *The Question of Homosexual Subcultures, - *Understanding the Changes, - and *Recommendations Made by the Priests. - Includes an epilogue, *Effects of the 2002 Sexual Misconduct Crisis. - Dean R. "Rekindle the gift of God that is within you", Saint Paul urges Timothy years after his ordination (2 Tim 1:6). Drawing on sixty years of experience as a Catholic priest, Cistercian Fr. Roch Kereszty provides realistic spiritual, psychological, and pastoral guidance to priests and seminarians—from preaching and sacramental ministry, to parish life and spiritual direction, to chastity and poverty. Countless priests struggle to understand their role and identity in the post-conciliar Church, where laypeople have taken on many responsibilities once considered priestly. With the sexual abuse crisis kicking up a cloud of confusion and discouragement, many young men are wondering, "Why join a system in which everyone is suspect?" Meanwhile, without the right guidance, those already ordained can find themselves slipping into boredom—or even cynicism. But Fr. Kereszty knows the fire of a true vocation. With insights and examples from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Thérèse of Lisieux, St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and many others, Rekindle the Gift of God helps priests and seminarians discover or rediscover their mission as shepherds, prophets, and teachers. A happy priest is one who lays down his life not only for his flock, but for his Lord. Father Kereszty gives patient, down-to-earth counsel on putting this ideal into practice, and he offers a glimpse of his own immense joy and gratitude for the gift of serving Jesus Christ.

"The past three decades have witnessed a decline in the number of Roman Catholic priests in Europe and North America, the result of resignations from the priesthood and of fewer people entering seminaries. A major cause contributing to this situation has been the ambiguity surrounding the role and identity of the priest in light of new theological paradigms. This book attempts to restore clarity to that matter by drawing primarily, although not exclusively, on the teachings of the Second Vatican Council, postconciliar theology and the pronouncements of Pope John Paul II." "The first chapter probes the relationship of the priest to Christ and the church. This is the basic theme of the book, since the manner in which the relationship is perceived colors all aspects of priestly life. The following three chapters examine the three forms of ministry the priest renders to the community: the ministry of the word, of worship and of pastoral care. The book ends with a consideration of the most fundamental role of the priest: a disciple of Jesus. So the book comes full circle, returning to the primary relationship of the priest to Christ and to the church as a community of disciples."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "This study tells how from early times the Roman Catholic mass was generally celebrated with the priest facing East across the altar. The people thus saw the back view of a vested minister performing a ritual largely hidden from them; and any consequent sense of the solemnity and even the secrecy of that ritual was viewed as integral to the nature of the sacrament, to be honoured and preserved. The churches of the Reformation took a different view, but the Roman use sailed on undisturbed, and even reinforced, by the radical attacks of the Reformers. This was the use which was imitated by the Anglo-Catholic movement in the Church of England in the nineteenth century, and then widely adopted in Anglicanism. However, the study shows that in the twentieth century, within the Roman Catholic Church itself, questions arose as to whether this practice was theologically necessary or pastorally helpful. Some experiments preceded Vatican II; bur it was in the wake of the post-conciliar liturgical reforms that changes spread across almost the whole of the global Communion -- the eucharistic president taking his position behind a free-standing altar, facing westward, or, as stated here, versus populum. This in turn provided the people with a full view of what he did, with implications for both his ceremonial actions and for their participation. The story did not end there; and the Roman Catholic Church has seen a reaction led or supported by some eminent leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI. Evaluating the theological principles of that reaction has provided extra colour to the study; but the author's final words concern 'best pastoral practice today.'"--

The church is made up of both the clergy and the laity. And for it to properly fulfill the mission for which it was instituted by Christ, all its members, each according to his or her God-given gift, must contribute both to the upbuilding of the church and to its mission. On the part of the laity, their active participation in the general mission of the church ad intra and ad extra has been a great challenge in the life and practice of the church throughout its history. The Second Vatican Council, in its spirit of aggiornamento, makes some positive difference. This work critically examines the conciliar documents, some relevant postconciliar documents, and theological reflection of some theologians. And finally, it proffers solutions that will enhance the active participation of the laity in the mission of the church in general and the church in Southeast Nigeria in particular.
