Widely used since the mid-twentieth century, GDP (gross domestic product) has become the world's most powerful statistical indicator of national development and progress. Practically all governments adhere to the idea that GDP growth is a primary economic target, and while criticism of this measure has grown, neither its champions nor its detractors deny its central importance in our political culture. In The Power of a Single Number, Philipp Lepenies recounts the lively history of GDP's political acceptance—and eventual dominance. Locating the origins of GDP measurements in Renaissance England, Lepenies explores the social and political factors that originally hindered its use. It was not until the early 1900s that an ingenuous lone-wolf economist revived and honed GDP's statistical approach. These ideas were then extended by John Maynard Keynes, and a more focused study of national income was born. American economists furthered this work by emphasizing GDP's ties to social well-being, setting the stage for its ascent. GDP finally achieved its singular status during World War II, assuming the importance it retains today. Lepenies's absorbing account helps us understand the personalities and popular events that propelled GDP to supremacy and clarifies current debates over the wisdom of the number's rule.

Performance Evaluation Of Computer And Communication Systems written by Jean-Yves Le Boudec and has been published by EPFL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-13 with Computers categories.

Performance evaluation is a critical stage of software- and hardware-system development that every computer engineer and scientist should master. Although complex Рrequiring skills in mathematics, measurement techniques and simulation Рperformance evaluation is primarily an art; indeed, the most difficult stage in a performance analysis is defining the approach: once you know what to do, it is less difficult to define a plan of attack with your familiar software tools. We present a set of topics, which we believe should be part of every engineer's intellectual toolkit. This includes the statistical exploitation of numerical results in an efficient and ethical way, for example: how to summarize variability or fairness; what transient removal in a simulation is; and how to make predictions from a time series. We also present well-known performance patterns, which helps to quickly bring the engineer to the main issues. For queuing theory, we focus on a subset of very useful results, such as operational laws. A highlight of the book is the development of Palm calculus, also called “the importance of the viewpoint,” which is central to queuing theory. Indeed, this topic has so many applications to simulation and to system analysis in general that it is a very good time investment. This book began as a set of lecture notes for a course given at EPFL.

The Decline Of The Individual written by Mark D. White and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-18 with Business & Economics categories.

This book explores the steady decline in the status of the individual in recent years and addresses common misunderstandings about the concept of individuality. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, technology, economics, philosophy, politics, and law, White explains how and why the individual has been devalued in the eyes of scholars, government leaders, and the public. He notes that developments in science have led to doubts about our cognitive competence, while assumptions made in the humanities have led to questions about our moral competence. In this book, White goes on to argue that both of these views are mistaken and that they stem from overly simplistic ideas about how individuals make choices, however imperfectly, in their interests, which are multifaceted and complex. In response, he proposes a new way to look at individuals that preserves their essential autonomy while emphasizing their responsibility to others, inspired by the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant and the legal and political philosophy reflected in the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. This book explains how individuality combines both rights and responsibilities, reconciles the popular yet false dichotomy between individual and society, and provides the basis for a humane and respectful civil society and government. This book is part of White's trilogy on the individual and society, which includes The Manipulation of Choice and The Illusion of Well-Being.

The power Heronian aggregation (PHA) operator can use the advantages of power average and the Heronian mean operator, which together could take into account the interrelationship of the aggregated arguments, and therefore alleviate the e ects caused by unreasonable data through considering the support degree between input arguments. However, PHA operators cannot be used to process single-valued neutrosophic numbers (SVNNs), which is significant for extending it to SVNNs.

Candlestick technical analysis is an old trading technique that tracks the short-term price movements by employing the relationship between open, high, low, and close prices. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the predictive power of candlestick trading strategies by using the Taiwan 151 component stocks daily data for the period from 2 January 1992 to 31 December 2009. The main contribution of this thesis is using a fourprice- level approach to categorize the single-line patterns constructed by candlestick charting in a systematical manner. The approach adopted in this thesis permits us to release for the limitation of recognition in a manner not previously possible. Moreover, we not only consider transaction costs and risk but also mitigate data-snooping problems conscientiously by several appropriate methods, including the bootstrap methodology and sub-sample and out-of-sample tests. We find evidence that four patterns are profitable for the Taiwan stock market after transaction costs, including one bullish pattern and three bearish ones.
