Why does it matter that our leaders care about us? What might we reasonably expect from a caring leader, and what price are we prepared to pay for it? Is caring leadership something ‘soft’, or can it be linked to strategy and delivery? International scholars from the fields of ancient and modern philosophy, psychology, organization studies and leadership development offer a strikingly original debate on what it means for leaders to care.

The issue of power is central in the analysis of the development and contemporary structures of nursing, the remedial therapies and social work. Both the idea of caring and the concept of professionalism are integral to the problems of power. Using material from the UK and the USA, this book examines the growth of these professions, and asks a critical perspective of their present organisation, highlighting race, gender and relationships with service users as central to such an analysis 'This is a fascinating book which will be of interest to everyone who has devoted thought to the nature of professional intervention in health care'. In Everybody Matters, CEO Bob Chapman and bestselling author Raj Sisodia challenge traditional thinking about how to run a business and how to be an inspirational leader. Starting in 1997, Barry-Wehmiller CEO Bob Chapman has pioneered a dramatically different approach to leadership that creates off-the-charts morale, loyalty, creativity, and business performance. At Barry-Wehmiller, every single person matters, just like in a family. That's not a cliché on a mission statement; it's the bedrock of the company's success. In Everybody Matters, Chapman and co-author Raj Sisodia show how any organization can stop viewing its employees are simply functions, to be moved around, 'managed' with carrots and sticks, or discarded at will. By doing so, disengaged workers begin to share their gifts and talents toward a shared future. Uninspired workers stop feeling that their jobs have no meaning. And everyone stops counting the minutes until it's time to go home. Everybody Matters chronicles Chapman's journey to find his true calling and provides clear steps to transform your own workplace, whether you lead two people or two hundred thousand. 'If you're ready for a new way of doing business, this is the book for you' Daniel H. Pink, author of To Sell Is Human and Drive 'Bob Chapman is on a mission to change the way businesses treat their employees' Inc.magazine

If your people know you care about them, they will move mountains. Employee engagement and loyalty expert Heather Younger outlines nine ways to manifest the radical power of caring support in the workplace. Here's the thing: most leaders think of themselves as caring leaders, but not all of them act in alignment with what that means for employees. Leaders may not be able to identify the level of care they are extending to their employees, but all employees intuitively know whether their bosses or managers are caring for them. Heather Younger argues that if you are looking for increased productivity, customer satisfaction, or employee engagement, you need to care for your employees first. Genuinely caring for people means that you want to see them succeed for themselves, not just for what they can do for you, your team, or your organization. This book incorporates ten sections with breakout stories and interviews that outline the necessary steps to make all employees feel included and cared for, as well as a call to action for all leaders. Younger states that leaders who have the positive power to change the lives of those they lead shouldn't just want to care for them; they should see it as imperative for the success of their employees and their organization.

This original study discusses the role of women in developing and dispersing caring power and, vice-versa, the role of caring power in constituting 'women' as modern social subjects, processes which began around 1800. Based on the historian-/philosopher Foucault's concept of pastoral power, "caring power" also takes into account the vital role played by gender. Both humanitarian and religious motives fostered the ideal of serving the well-being of individual 'others' and thereby the interest of society as a whole. With the rise of caring power, this book argues, women began to feel responsible for 'those of their own sex' and to organize themselves in all-female organizations. In the process they carved out new gender identities for themselves and the women in their care. The authors illustrate this profound historical change with the work of the reformers Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845) and Josephine Butler (1828-1906) and trace their impact in Britain and the Netherlands.
