Excerpt from The Power of Reason We have to assume that other peoples in the world simply do not have our fortunate, fortunate-history. We have got to recognize a world where there is diversity, not one divided into two antagonistic forces in a cold war but a world in which there are many kinds of peoples, with very different cultures. What is good for America is not necessarily going to be good for other people. We cannot export all the values that we ourselves love and cherish. Excerpt from Christian Science Before the Bar of Reason Americans like a humbug, and are willing to pay for the right kind. After all, this running after strange and novel theories and religions is but the weakness of human nature, manifesting itself during the ages. St. Paul tells us: In the last days, shall come dangerous times. Men shall be lovers of themselves, covetous, haughty, proud, blasphemers, having an ap pearance indeed of godliness, but denying the power thereof. Now these avoid. For of these sort are they who creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, who are led away with divers desires Ever learning and never attaining to the knowledge of the truth. II Tim. Iii. 1 - 7. The work is opportune and will be productive of the very best results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Art of Logical Thinking: Or the Laws of Reasoning Reasoning is defined as The act, process or art of exercising the faculty of rea son; the act or faculty of employing reason in argument; argumentation, ratiocination; rea soning power; disputation, discussion, argu mentation. Stewart says: The word rea son itself is far from being precise in its mean ing. In common and popular discourse it de notes that power by which we distinguish truth from falsehood, and right from wrong, and by which we are enabled to combine means for the attainment of particular ends. Excerpt from Immortality of Man From the Standpoint of Reason The truths most interesting to us, as human beings, are those of our past, - before our birth into this world, of our future after we leave it, and of our duty while in it. These are facts, for the answer to which the eager cry of the human race forever goes up. What is man? Whence came he? Whither goes he? In the hands of what power is he? Excerpt from Bible of Reason: Being Additions to Part II.; Or, Scriptures of Modern Authors 1. The things that are natural are the things that are eternal in their kinds; nature never dies. "When will the stream be aweary of flowing; When will the wind be aweary of blowing; When will the clouds be aweary of fleeting; When will the heart be aweary of beating; And nature die? Never, oh! never, - nothing will die. The stream flows, The wind blows, The cloud fleets, The heart beats, Nothing will die." 2. The lapse of time has no effect to wear out or destroy the machinery of the universe. 'By ceaseless action all that is, subsists; Constant rotation of the unwearied wheel: Its own revolvency upholds the world.' 3. The complexional features of the race are fixed and unchangeable: the eternal image of nature cannot possibly be effaced. 4. Change is the universal attribute of nature, i. e. the expiration and renewal of every individual: life is but a span that divides the antenatal and posthumous eternities. "Individuals die. Clearly the blue river chimes in its flowing; Warmly and broadly the south winds are blowing; One after another the white clouds are fleeting; Every heart this gay morning in joyance is beating Full merrily: Yet all things must die. The stream will cease to flow, The wind will cease to blow, The clouds will cease to fleet, The heart will cease to beat; For all things must die." "The kingdoms of the world have passed away, And its strong empires mouldered into dust, Swift as the changes of a poet's dream; And kings, and heroes, and the mighty minds Whose hopes circled eternity, and seized The stars as their inheritance, and grew Too big for mortal frames - until they sank Into the narrow hounds of nature - or, if left, Of power, of life, of motion, all bereft!" Excerpt from The Commonwealth of Reason As the end of all government is, or ought to be, the security, happiness, and advantage of the governed, and not the exclusive benefit and interest of those i11t1usted with the legislative or executive power, who should only be considered as the organs by Which the majority of the community express their will, and as the servants of the Commonwealth, amenable at all times, for their conduct. To the people, these being the fountain from whence alone can spring legitimate, authority; it may not be unacceptable, in these speculative times, when the science of political government-appears to have awakened men's curiosity in an extraordinary degree, and the greater part of the world seem bent on the investigation of its principles, and on the destruction of those abuses, the existence of which has but too long disgraced civilized society, to have some mode pointed out, by which, should any of the present systems, so fraught with ruin, and injurious to the true interests of mankind, be abolished, we can reasonably hope to obtain what ought to constitute the only object of every institution, whether political or social - public happiness, from which source alone can flow individual felicity. Excerpt from Elementary Logic Books on Logic Often begin with what professes to be a definition Of the Science. And if by a definition all that is meant is a vague general statement of aim or purpose, that is easy to give; the aim Of Logic, always and every where, is to' study the difference between good and bad reasoning. Even the loftiest and least mundane kind Of Logic cannot really escape from this purpose; for what interest could there be in ideally perfect truths if no one was ever in the least danger of forgetting them? It was the liability of mankind to reason badly that first called Logic into existence, and that still makes the study worth while; and to confess its lack Of power to detect bad reasoning, or to boast of a lack Of interest in doing this, would be fatal to its claims. The general aim Of Logic, then, is clear. But real difficulties begin as soon as we try to get the scope and method of the Science into its definition, for thereby we run'a risk Of begging the very important ques tion whether a particular limitation of scope, or a particular method, is a help or a hindrance in achieving the aim. There is no general agreement on this point. Indeed that is a mild way of putting it, for we live' in times when there is a widespread and growing revolt against certain Old methods and Old limitations Of Logic which have come. Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Old and New Testament Asserted Pretenfion to this Charaéter. I would be one Of the lafl to charge any Man with a Want of Honefiy and Sincerity: but there are ma ny Things in his Book that look like a wilful Perverfion and Mifreprefentation of Faéts, as well as Arguments and fometimes fo circum fianced, that it is fcarce pofiible for the molt extenfive Charity to fuppofe that it'was owing to mere Ignorance. Perhaps the Author him felf would not be willing to accept of this A pology. I cannot help looking upon it as an Honour to Chrifiianity, that its Adveifaries find themfelves obliged to take fuch Methods as thefe, in order to carry on their Defigns a gainft it. Does not this argue a fecret Con fcioufnefs that they can never prevail by a fair Attack upon the Scriptures For furely he muf't be either very wicked or very foolilh, that would have recourfe to fuch bafe Arts as thefe to ferve his Caufe, if he thought his End could be anfwered without it, and that fair and juft Reafoning, and an equal candid Ma nagement would do as well.
