Syphilis and the venereal diseases have been well studied in the armies in the field, and emergency treatment has been devised, while prophy lactic measures have been given trial on a large scale. Attention has been called to the possible spread of lep rosy due to contact of soldiers in the fields with the dis ease where it is endemic. Trench fighting, under the conditions imposed during cold weather, has produced numerous cases of erythema and gangrene of the feet, similar to frost-bite, due in these instances to temperature above the freezing point. Adamson.4 The patient, an attractive young woman, was not suspected by Adamson of hysteria. Her illness began with the unexplained appearance of patches of weeping eczema on the face. These continued to recur on the cheeks, forehead, neck, arms, and later thighs and legs despite treatment and covering with dressing. The crop never failed for a year, the condition being some times better, sometimes worse. In the initial stage there was an erythemous flush which rapidly became moist, suppurated and healed with a crust. The eruption was often square or linear, sometimes round. A dermatol ogist consulted pronounced the case one of dermatitis herpetiformis. The patient went to a specialist without results. Another dermatologist regarded it as a case of dermatitis artefacta. The parents were skeptical; watch ing by a nurse failed. The patient was removed at length to a nursing home. Here three days after admission, a movement under the bedclothes led to the detection of the lady's hand holding most unsuspiciously a handkerchief, but in the handkerchief was a small ragged piece of pumice-stone! Thereupon this protracted dermatosis came quickly to a complete end. The patient later feigned hemoptysis and bowel obstruction, and was detected. The manuscripts of the Cairo Genizah are a unique source for medieval medical history. In Medical Prescriptions in the Cambridge Genizah Collections, Lev and Chipman offer an insight into the everyday practical medicine of medieval Egypt, which reflects medical practice in the Eastern Mediterranean as a whole, by analysing thirty selected prescriptions from the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Collection (Cambridge University Library). The prescriptions, which are in Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic, are transcribed and translated, with accompanying commentaries, photographs and glossaries. Introductory chapters discuss the theoretical background of the prescriptions and the practical medicine of the Cairo Genizah, while the conclusion considers their significance for the study of the medieval medical tradition.
