Delivering a ground-breaking analysis of the EU’s diplomatic meetings (or dialogues) with China, this book reveals how the EU’s values rarely feature in exchanges, due to ingrained cultures of complacency and self-censorship amongst EU officials. Based on extensive interviews, and focusing on individual perceptions and practices, the book also highlights how intercultural misunderstanding and unreflective beliefs contribute to this troubling status quo with serious implications. Furthermore, these dynamics run contrary to the Lisbon Treaty (2009) – where the EU states that its values inform its external relations – threatening the rules-based order that upholds the universal values and international norms the EU shares. At a time of flux in EU-China relations and geopolitical instability, this book’s timely insights will be of great interest and value to scholars and practitioners alike. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European (Union) foreign policy and diplomacy, EU-China relations, Chinese foreign policy, human rights diplomacy, sustainable development, trade policy and more broadly in European and Asian Studies, and International Relations.

This book delineates the role and evolution of the European Union (EU) as an instrument of soft power in relation to South Asian countries. It explains the EU’s development policy towards South Asia and examines its cooperation while attempting to assess the extent to which EU’s development policy can be an instrument of soft power. In addition to examining the development challenges in South Asian countries and the impact of the EU’s development assistance on them, this book describes the various theoretical approaches on the concept of development, along with the interplay of aid politics in international relations (IR). Primarily, it assesses how the EU’s development policy emerged as a significant instrument of power towards developing countries. This book will be useful to students, scholars, and researchers of development studies, political science, sociology, economics, foreign policy, diplomacy, area and regional studies, South Asian studies, EU politics and European integration, international relations, and public administration. It will also be an indispensable companion for EU policymakers, NGOs and civil societies, South Asian states’ policymakers, and general readers interested in learning more about development diplomacy and soft power.

The Fukuda Doctrine has been the official blueprint to Japan's foreign policy towards Southeast Asia since 1977. This book examines the Fukuda Doctrine in the context of Japan-Southeast Asia relations, and discusses the possibility of a non-realist approach in the imagining and conduct of international relations in East Asia. The collapse of 54 years of Liberal Democratic Party rule and the advent of a new Democratic Party of Japan raises the question of whether the Fukuda Doctrine is still relevant as a framework to analyse Tokyo's policy and behaviour towards Southeast Asia. Looking at its origins and norms amidst three decades of change, the book argues that the Fukuda Doctrine is still relevant to Japan-Southeast Asian relations, and should be extended to relations between China and Japan if an East Asian Community is to be built. The book goes on to discuss the Fukuda Doctrine in relation to the power shift in Asia, including the revitalization of Japan's security role. By providing a detailed understanding of a non-western perspective of Japan's relationship with Southeast Asia, this book is a useful contribution for students and scholars of Asian Studies, Politics and International Relations.

The Diplomatic Making Of Eu China Relations written by Lucie Qian Xia and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-11 with Political Science categories.

This book provides a novel theoretical framework to understand EU-China diplomatic relations. The existing scholarly literature on EU-China relations is characterised by a dichotomous distinction between material and ideational factors and overemphasises the ‘interest versus value’ motif undergirding EU-China relations. The diplomacy and future direction of the relationship seem as opaque as their extent remains incalculably complex. This book takes us beyond binary motives by introducing a novel theoretical model of diplomatic relationship-building that brings to the fore the more nuanced and latent factors to make sense of EU-China diplomatic relationship-building; the new theory captures the ‘relational’ nature of diplomatic relationship-building by integrating the social layer of ‘intentions’ in understanding international diplomacy. This study further sheds light on the opportunities and challenges in enhancing EU-China relations, through a comparative in-depth investigation of the processes, practices and politics of EU-China climate change and agricultural-trade relations over the past two decades. The book draws on a rich collection of original data, encompassing over 100 interviews with stakeholders of EU-China relations conducted from 2015–2023; strengthened by participant observation at EU and Chinese institutional headquarters and in diplomatic fora that has taken place over the past ten years. Enriching these data are newly disclosed official minutes and documentation regarding EU-China negotiations and cooperation. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy studies, Chinese politics, EU politics and international relations in general.

China S Normative Power In Central And Eastern Europe written by Fangxing Qin and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-30 with Political Science categories.

Qin explores the ten-year development of relations between China and Central and Eastern Europe through the China–CEEC (China–Central and Eastern European Countries) cooperation (16/17+1), which began as a platform for annual high-level meetings between leaders of China and Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries, and to stimulate new dynamism and gain recognition through effective shared practice. This book analyses the process of co-construction of shared practices between China and the Czech Republic through China–CEEC cooperation from 2012 to 2021 from the perspective of normative power. It proposes the concept of ‘earning recognition’ that provides a specific analytical path for dynamically measuring whether an actor could be seen as having normative power and brings new insights from the perspective of normative power to the debates on China’s ideational influence in the CEE region. It provides a wealth of empirical evidence for reflecting on the failure of China’s approach in the Czech Republic, adding an important piece of the puzzle to the study of China–CEE relations. A valuable resource for scholars and practitioners in the field of international relations and China studies, especially those who specialise in China–CEE relations and those interested in China’s impact on the world, the Central and Eastern European region, and the competition for influence among major powers.

The China-EC/EU relationship, started in 1975, is a highly institutionalized, multidimensional and complex, but to some extent controversial international partnership. It is also challenged within the current unstable world. This book addresses the convergences and the differences (ideational, political, institutional and interests-related) between China and the EU by a collective interaction between Chinese and European scholars. Among other things the book assesses sectoral bilateral dialogue and focuses on the interplay between internal complexity and external policies, discusses ideational divergences in international law and rule of law and in many relevant policy fields. Furthermore, it compares sustainable growth policies; explores trade and investment controversies and negotiations, human rights dialogue; and addresses environment and climate change policies. This text will be of key interest to EU studies and politics, China studies and more broadly to area/Asian studies and international relations/global governance.

Diplomacy In Japan Eu Relations written by Oliviero Frattolillo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-26 with History categories.

Since the 1950s, Japan-Europe relations have been characterised by a mutual coldness in terms of diplomatic dialogue, punctuated by a number of trade disputes. This book analyses the development of the political and diplomatic relationship between Japan and Europe, and shows that – especially during the Cold War years – whilst they share a wide range of political values and goals, the quality of diplomatic relations has often been sacrificed to both overcome trade issues and as a result of systemic factors. Focusing on the institutionalization of relations between Japan and the EU, this book examines both the historical-diplomatic dimension and political-strategic discourse. It traces the historical development of the relationship from the post-war years, to the signing of the Japan-EU action plan in 2001, which marked a key turning point in the relationship. It goes on to examine the achievements and criticisms of ASEM, the Asia-Europe Meeting, which whilst meeting successfully for the past sixteen years, has also been condemned as little more than a talking shop. Crucially, Oliviero Frattolillo’s analysis clearly demonstrates how the interaction between Japan and the EU has been constructed on the basis of their perceptions of each other, thus underlining the inherent impact of different political identities, cultures and values on international relations. Providing a keen insight into Japan-EU relations, this book will appeal to students and scholars of Japanese and European history and politics, as well as those interested in the history of international relations and security studies.

This book focuses on the question of whether and how civil society may contribute to policy innovation. As the focus of civil society research is often more on the constraints on civil society by the state and less on the agency and effects of civil society organisations the authors provide a fresh and fruitful perspective.
