"Drawing from rich, naturally occurring language data and synthesizing insights from the fields of interpersonal pragmatics and Chinese interpersonal communication, this book presents a compelling exploration of the management of negative emotions through an interpersonal pragmatics lens. The volume seeks to answer a number of key questions at the intersection of these two fields, including: how do negative interpersonal emotions manifest in the context of Chinese culture? What connections exist between emotions and interpersonal dynamics? In what ways are these emotions intertwined with the moral framework of Chinese society? How are such negative emotions effectively navigated and regulated? Analysis goes beyond mere examination of emotional expressions, delving into the cultural nuances that shape the understanding and handling of emotions. The book elucidates, for instance, how unmet ganqing expectations can trigger emotions like anger and sadness, and in turn, the employment of rapport management strategies in their mitigation. The book provides profound insights into a previously overlooked and little understood area of study, making it of interest to students and researchers in pragmatics, discourse analysis, communication studies, and psychotherapy"--

It will serve to shed light on the understanding of how Chinese people monitor their speech in the course of communication, and will function as an important reference for researchers and students who conduct cross-linguistic comparative or contrastive metapragmatic research concerning Chinese and other languages.

The authors proceed from the assumption that IPBC can only reach maximum efficiency provided that its participants assimilate its inherent norms and rules and are able to skillfully implement these norms and rules to verbalise their cognitive activity in the sphere of professional business interaction. Topics covered include: analysis of the theory of business communication, of codified and uncodified vocabulary, theory of euphemy, and euphemisms used in intercultural professional and business communication.

There is growing acceptance among pragmaticians that identity is often (de)constructed and negotiated in communication in order to impact the outcome of the interaction. Filling an important gap in current research, this book offers the first systematic, pragmatic theory to account for the generative mechanisms of identity in communication. Using data drawn from real-life communicative contexts in China, Xinren Chen examines why identity strategies are adopted, how and why identities are constructed and what factors determine their appropriateness and effectiveness. In answering these questions, this book argues that identity is an essential communicative resource, present across various domains and able to be exploited to facilitate the realization of communicative needs. Demonstrating that communication in Chinese involves the dynamic choice and shift of identity by discursive means, Exploring Identity Work in Chinese Communication suggests that identity is intersubjective in communication in all languages and that it can be accepted, challenged, or even deconstructed.

Toward Multimodal Pragmatics written by Lihe Huang and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Classic pragmatic theories emphasize the linguistic aspect of illocutionary acts and forces. However, as multimodality has gained importance and popularity, multimodal pragmatics has quickly become a frontier of pragmatic studies. This book adds to this new research trend by offering a perspective of situated discourse in the Chinese context. Using the multimodal corpus approach, this study examines how speakers use multiple devices to perform illocutionary acts and express illocutionary forces. Not only does the author use qualitative analysis to study the types, characteristics, and emergence patterns of illocutionary forces, he also performs a quantitative, corpus-based analysis of the interaction of illocutionary forces, emotions, prosody, and gestures. The results show that illocutionary forces are multimodal in nature while meaning in discourse is created through an interplay of an array of modalities. Students and scholars of pragmatics, corpus linguistics, and Chinese linguistics will benefit from this title.
