Coinage Of Arabia Felix written by Stuart C. Munro-Hay and has been published by Archaeopress Archaeology this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Art categories.

Mare Erythraeum is an occasional series, dealing with the ethnography and archaeology of the lands bordering the Red Sea and their links with the Indian ocean. This is the sixth volume in this series. The coinage of the South Arabian Peninsula has not been studied in detail since 1922, when G. F. Hill published his catalogue of the British Museum collection. This work is the sixth in this series, and follows on from previous editions which examined coinage from Aksum. South Arabia is an area of study which is of great interest in terms of the historical and cultural significance of the region. The coinage of the Yemen from Pre-Islamic times is an important factor contributing towards the study of the iconography and symbolism of the people of this period, and displays important elements of the continuity and disturbances in the Yemen at this time. Munro-Hay links this information to known historical and archaeological developments in the Yemen in terms of religious, political and cultural factors. Munro-Hay,carried out extensive work cataloguing a large number of coins from the site of Shabwa in Hadhramawt, as well as a preliminary survey of coins from Hajar Am-Dhaybiyya. This information, along with the collection of the National Museum at Aden and other various collections, revealed several new types of coin, and form the main body of work for this book. The coinage studied shows itself to be richer than previously thought, and although these new types of coin greatly improve our understanding of the coinage of Southern Arabia, this is still an area where new finds are constantly being made, such as coins of the royal series or from the copper or bronze 'bucranium' series. Because ofthis the numbering system used by Munro-Hay in this study takes into account the expectation of future finds, thereby making this a flexible catalogue of study even if circumstances in this field change radically.

Historical Dictionary Of Yemen written by Robert D. Burrowes and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Yemen (Republic) categories.

A small and extremely poor Islamic country, Yemen is located on the edge of the Arab world in the southernmost corner of the Arabian Peninsula. It was the product of the unification of the Yemen Arab Republic and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen in May 1990. The location of the two Yemens on the world's busiest sea-lane at the southern end of the Red Sea where Asia almost meets Africa gave them strategic significance from the start of the age of imperialism through the Cold War. More vital today is the fact that Yemen shares a long border with oil-rich Saudi Arabia and is a key to efforts both to spread and to end global revolutionary Islam and its use of terror. The second edition of the Historical Dictionary of Yemen has been thoroughly updated and greatly expanded. Through its list of acronyms and abbreviations, a chronology, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and over 800 cross-referenced dictionary entries, greater attention has been given to foreign affairs, economic institutions and policies, social issues, religion, and politics.

Indian Ocean In Antiquity written by Julian Reade and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-28 with Social Science categories.

The beaches of the Indian Ocean stretch in a golden arc from the Atlantic to the Pacific, delimiting the entire southern boundary of the old world. On the lands adjoining this ocean and its inlets, almost every variety of human adaptation is or has been represented, as have the interactions between them. Societies of fisherman and pirates, hunters and gatherers, herdsmen and agrarian farmers, states and urban civilizations based on farming or trade, have all flourished at one time or another. Yet studies of the systems of the Indian Ocean before the spread of Islam remain in their infancy and until now the record on early Indian Ocean civilizations has been fragmented. The Indian Ocean in Antiquity brings together an international group of leading scholars to present, for the first time, a comprehensive view of the current state of research on the early populations of the area. After an introductory chapter, the twenty-six papers are grouped into four sections: The Environment and Natural Resources; The Early Civilizations; The Classical Period and Between Africa and China. They comprise the most far-reaching look at this vast region in pre-modern times that has ever been available. This pioneering volume makes an important contribution to the understanding of a region of great significance in world history, both past and future.Topics include: sea levels and other factors affecting coastal settlement; contracts between Mesopotamia and the Indus; Achaemenid, Parthian and Sasanian maritime activity; Roman interests in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean; the archeological evidence for early trade between South and Southeast Asia; the early settlement of Madagascar; the ethnographic evidence for long-distance contacts between Oceania and East Africa and recent discoveries of Christian and Hindu remains in Quanzhou.
