Their style, as will be seen, is that of direct address, which for those who heard them was perhaps the most appropriate, but for those who may read them, it is not, to say the least, such as I should choose. For this reason, there fore, I was disposed to change, not their substance, but their form. I soon found, however, that the one involved the other, and that it was not easy, if indeed possible, to change the phrasing of the thought without changing also the thought; and that was something which I felt I had no right to do; neither had I.
