Read & Co. presents Wordworth's collected works; “The Prelude”, “The Recluse” and “The Excursion” together in one volume with additional biographical excerpts by Anna Maria Hall, Leigh Hunt and Thomas Carlyle. A fantastic collection of Wordsworth's best poetry not to be missed by fans and collectors of his wonderful work. “The Prelude”, a poem written in blank verse, is Wordsworth's autobiographical magnum opus within which he offers the reader a plethora of personal details about his life. He began writing when he was just 28 and continued to work on it throughout his life. Changed and expanded many times, it was originally conceived as an introduction to “The Recluse”, an unfinished work. “The Excursion” is the second and only completed part of Wordsworth's “The Recluse”. It revolves around three central figures: the Solitary, who has lived through the horrors and hopes of the French Revolution; the Pastor, to whom a third of the poem is dedicated; and the Wanderer. “The Recluse” was to be Wordsworth 's three-part masterpiece, but tragically remains uncompleted. William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was an English Romantic poet famous for helping to usher in the Romantic Age in English literature with the publication of “Lyrical Ballads” (1798), which he co-wrote with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He was also notably poet laureate of Britain between 1843 until his death in 1850. Other notable works by this author include: “The Tables Turned”, “The Thorn”, and “Lines Composed A Few Miles above Tintern Abbey”.

Wordsworth's longest poem, and the only part of a projected magnum opus to be published in his lifetime, The Excursion has been neglected in favor of its autobiographical companion, The Prelude. It is however one of the great works of English Romanticism, in which Wordsworth succeeds in his object of conveying clear thoughts, lively images, and strong feelings. Through the semi-dramatic adoption of various selves he narrates the stories of a range of Lake District inhabitants, most famously in the tragic tale of the ruined cottage; airs views on the French and Industrial Revolutions (attacking the factory system and advocating universal state education); and meditates on Man, Nature, and Society. .

"First published in July 1850, shortly after Wordsworth's death, The Prelude was the culmination of over fifty years of creative work. The great Romantic poem of human consciousness, it takes as its theme 'the growth of a poet's mind': leading the reader back to Wordsworth's formative moments of childhood and youth, and detailing his experiences as a radical undergraduate in France at the time of the Revolution. Initially inspired by Coleridge's exhortation that Wordsworth write a work upon the French Revolution, The Prelude has ultimately become one of the finest examples of poetic autobiography ever written; a fascinating examination of the self that also presents a comprehensive view of the poet's own creative vision"--biblio.com viewed Feb. 19, 2021.

The first and second books introduce the characters of the Wanderer and the Solitary, respectively. The fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth books introduce the character of the Pastor and consist largely of the Pastor explaining the life stories of many of the townspeople who lie buried in the country-churchyard. “The Recluse” is part one of an unfinished philosophical poem by William Wordsworth. It was intended to be a long three-part epic but, although planned in his late 20s, Wordsworth went to his grave at 80 years old having written to some completion only "The Prelude" and the second part "The Excursion", and leaving no more than fragments of the rest. “The Recluse” was to be Wordsworth 's three-part masterpiece, but tragically remains uncompleted. We are republishing this short piece with introductory biographical excerpts from Leigh Hunt, Anna Marie Hall and Thomas Carlyle. This little book constitutes a must-read for poetry lovers and is not to be missed by those with an interest in the life and work of this celebrated English Romantic poet. He was frequently away from home on business, so the young William and his siblings had little involvement with him and remained distant from him until his death in 1783.However, he did encourage William in his reading, and in particular set him to commit large portions of verse to memory, including works by Milton, Shakespeare and Spenser. William was also allowed to use his father's library. William also spent time at his mother's parents' house in Penrith, Cumberland, where he was exposed to the moors, but did not get along with his grandparents or his uncle, who also lived there. His hostile interactions with them distressed him to the point of contemplating suicide.Wordsworth was taught to read by his mother and attended, first, a tiny school of low quality in Cockermouth, then a school in Penrith for the children of upper-class families, where he was taught by Ann Birkett, who insisted on instilling in her students traditions that included pursuing both scholarly and local activities, especially the festivals around Easter, May Day and Shrove Tuesday...
