George Eldon Ladd's comprehensive treatment of New Testament eschatology has become the definitive discussion of the theological interpretation known as "inaugurated eschatology." Reflecting profound biblical insight and a balanced treatment of conflicting views, this volume convincingly develops Ladd's thesis that the kingdom of God involves two great movements -- its present fulfillment in Jesus and its future consummation in the last days. Ladd begins this revised edition (formerly titled Jesus and the Kingdom) by taking readers step by step through the findings of his predecessors and contemporaries on the great debate as to whether the kingdom of God promised by Jesus is now, in the immediate future, or in some unknown time to come. He then traces the prophetic expectation of the kingdom in the Old Testament, pursues the development of this expectation through the intertestamental literature, and, against this background, reconstructs the teaching and mission of Jesus. Ultimately, Ladd finds the key to understanding the kingdom in the concept of "the rule of God." His interpretation of the divine reign brings together the Old Testament promise of the kingdom, its fulfillment in history, and its consummation at the end of history. - Back cover.

Should we live for today, and let the future take care of itself? Is everything just chance? Or is the future a land of opportunity, full of possibilities if only we knew how to grasp them? Do we have a future at all? The rapid pace of change in our society can sometimes leave us reeling. Globalisation, technological advancements, changes in the roles of men and women, changing perceptions of morality and truth, nothing seems to stay the same. Often we try not to think about the future at all. Roy McCloughry reminds us that how we face the future, as individuals and as a society, will influence how we live today. God is not surprised by the future, by change in the way that we are. But in order to see it with his eyes, we need to recognise that a christian view of future is rooted in an event in history, in the resurrection itself. This broad-ranging and hopeful book does not seek to predict the future, so much as to understand it in the light of our Christian hope.

Leaning into the Future seeks to explore what it may mean to believe in the "Kingship" of God and wait for his "Kingdom" by considering the fundamental role the Kingdom of God plays in the theology of Jurgen Moltmann and in the book of Revelation. Part one is devoted to how Moltmann understands "The Kingdom of God" as the fundamental symbol of hope for humanity, and how he sees the presence of God's reign and kingdom in history as hidden and paradoxical. Part two turns to the way the Book of Revelation uses royal and other political language in its portrait of the future and God's presence in history. In this second part, the book also seeks to explore how Moltmann and the Apocalypse may mutually inform each other, how Moltmann may help us read this biblical book today, and how it in turn may overcome some of the weaknesses in Moltmann's proposal.

The divide between the techno-scientific and the humanities paradigm has critically endangered general comprehension. The prolegomena to a «unified field theory of futurology» presented here attempt to reconcile these epistemological models by meticulously investigating a gamut of supposedly separate areas, from the social use of art or religion via demographic, economic and technological data to moral and political philosophy. This highly panoramatic and integrative inspection of problems humankind will be facing in the near and foreseeable future yields novel perspectives and a superior grasp of beneficial social practice.

From the beginning of time, humans have been driven by both a fear of the unknown and a curiosity to know. We have always yearned to know what lies ahead, whether threat or safety, scarcity or abundance. Throughout human history, our forebears tried to create certainty in the unknown, by seeking to influence outcomes with sacrifices to gods, preparing for the unexpected with advice from oracles, and by reading the stars through astrology. As scientific methods improve and computer technology develops we become ever more confident of our capacity to predict and quantify the future by accumulating and interpreting patterns form the past, yet the truth is there is still no certainty to be had. In this Very Short Introduction Jennifer Gidley considers some of our most burning questions: What is "the future "?; Is the future a time yet to come?; Or is it a utopian place?; Does the future have a history?; Is there only one future or are there many possible futures? She asks if the future can ever be truly predicted or if we create our own futures - both hoped for and feared - by our thoughts, feelings, and actions, and concludes by analysing how we can learn to study the future. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
