What well-meaning Nigerians hope is that the Buhari administration meets their expectations in the change they desired and voted for. The administration should continue to learn from the mistakes of its predecessor, build upon those mistakes and deliver from that knowledge. The Buhari administration should appreciate this fact. It is the truth spoken to authority. When Jonathan was there, he inherited and had to deal with many problems, just as the new Buhari administration is expected to do. Those challenges were there before President Jonathan was elected into office. And he dealt with them as much as he was able to do during his one-term tenure. Some of them will definitely be inherited by the Buhari administration. He, too, will be expected to deal with them to the best of his ability. No one expects all of the country's problems to be solved under one government or under one term of office. The metamorphoses of armed militant ethnic groups of the Niger Delta, armed resistance of the dreaded Boko Haram in the north-east, the MASSOB and IPOB in the east, OPC in the west, APC in the north--these militant groups were there. They didn't start with Jonathan's administration. They may not end with Buhari's government. Nation-building implies continuity. A new incoming government continues from where its predecessor stopped.

The Presidential Years: From Dr. Jonathan to Gen. Buhari captures a very sensitive period in the evolution of democracy in Nigeria. Some of the very important events which took place during the decade 2010 to 2020 which motivated Nigerians to vote for change are analytically x-rayed in the book. The challenging confrontations that faced the country in its frantic search for true democracy are also succinctly narrated in the book for those who may find interest in knowing how far Nigeria had come. In a very crucial sense, these were the years Nigeria's political leaders were accosted with the most drastic demands for democratic reforms and were able, through legislative dialogues, a level of official impunity and tribal pressure to establish what can best be defined as the fundamental tenets of democratic governance. Unarguably, Nigeria has some of the best brains in the world. Nigeria is endowed with great mineral resources which include oil and gas. But unfortunately, so many successful and unique Nigerians are literarily running away from their country to serve the interest of foreign countries because the social conditions Nigerian political leaders created does not favour them. So many educated Nigerians and even the not-so-educated ones daily leave the country in their droves in search of greener pasture abroad. Many Nigerian university graduates in America and Europe end up doing menial jobs as plate washers and security guards. But, ironically, they are happier doing such jobs than staying and working in Nigeria. One reason is because they are paid their wages at the end of the day and no one owes anyone salary arrears. In Nigeria, you get owed so many months arrears of salary that the typical Nigerian no longer needs a job - he needs money - and he goes for it. All these are challenges that Nigerian leaders must look into if the country must consolidate on the foundational gains it made during this decade. So, at the end of the day Nigerians can come home to proudly Nigeria. There will be nothing greater in the march towards true democracy than that assurance that Nigerians can rely on the great manpower and mineral resources nature endowed their country with to give it its rightful place in the comity of nations.
