The right to be heard, even at the highest levels, is something Americans take for granted. Over the years countless people have taken pen in hand and begun a letter with the words Dear Mr. President. A mere toe dip into the National Archives' vast holdings, Dear Mr. President presents a delirious potpourri of 87 letters for perusal. The epistolary arts are every voyeur's secret pleasure, and the most public of public offices compels people of all walks of life, from children to the working man to the very famous, to put pen to paper. This carefully selected batch of letters, from over one hundred years of archiving letters to the President, includes such gems as the letter from a ten year old Fidel Castro to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 requesting ten bucks; an offer from Annie Oakley to President McKinley to raise a company of fifty American lady sharpshooters in the event of a war with Spain; a scrawled note on American Airlines in flight letterhead from Elvis Presley to Richard Nixon offering his services to fight the Hippie Elements; and a very moving letter about the state of civil rights from Jackie Robinson to President Eisenhower. The book opens with a 5,000 word introduction by Thomas Mallon, a well known figure who can place these letters in the American consciousness and give some further information on some of them. The letters themselves are reproduced where possible as full size facsimiles and are accompanied with commentary to help the reader place them within historical events. Some archival photos will also run with the letters, in cases where we have photos of the writer and the President together.

My Dear President written by Gerard W. Gawalt and has been published by Black Dog & Leventhal this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-02-06 with History categories.

My Dear President is a historic, heartfelt collection of letters between first ladies and presidents -- including many that have never been published -- that casts a warm, new light on our leaders at their most open-hearted and vulnerable. "I am very madly in love with you," wrote Lyndon Johnson to his future wife, Bird Taylor. James Madison sent off this plaintive line to his wife Dolley: "Every thing around and within reminds me that you are absent." In this inspiring collection of correspondence between U.S. presidents and their wives are hundreds of unguarded moments of affection, strain, grief, and triumph, revealing as never before the private thoughts and working partnerships of our most public figures. Culled from the holdings of the Library of Congress and various presidential libraries and private collections, it is the most comprehensive compilation of its kind ever put together. Gerard Gawalt, a curator of presidential papers at the Library of Congress for the past thirty years, has divided the book thematically into such topics as love, war, politics, travel, and sorrow. Each letter appears in its entirety, with the original spelling and grammar intact, and is set in historic context for a full sense of the moment that formed its backdrop. In most cases, exchanges are included, forming an enlightening dialogue between husband and wife. Throughout, historic photographs and artwork from the Library of Congress's collection enhance the text. Like its companion volume, First Daughters, My Dear President is bound to become a cherished gift for all those interested in American history for years to come.

Over the course of the past few years, Jim Carfagna has held a correspondence with the President of the United States, George W. Bush. Although it is not clear exactly whether or not the President actually specifically listened to Mr. Carfagna, that is a distinct possibility, because, every time he has written the President, the President seems to have listened, and not everything he writes opinions about makes sense to everyone. 99% of them do. However, the other 1% do not. As a result, somehow, whether it be that the President is listening directly to him, or because there were so many thousands of other people e-mailing the President with the same opinion as Jim, the President listened. And, these e-mail correspondences have concerned virtually every major issue that a President deals with (not all of the issues a President deals with get news coverage, according to the President.) These are some of those correspondences.

Ronald Reagan, one of America’s most beloved presidents, is now gone. But his voice lives on in this stirring and very personal collection of letters written during his presidency to his fellow Americans, showing us a new and surprisingly intimate side of our fortieth president. During even the busiest times in his presidency, Ronald Reagan took time out to respond to dozens of letters each week from the many friends and private citizens who wrote to him about their concerns. These letters, collected in the president’s “Handwriting File,” have never been examined by historians. Now Ralph E. Weber and his son, Ralph A. Weber, have culled the best of this collection, arranged chronologically to track the course of political events during the eight years of his presidency. A fascinating glimpse at the issues facing the United States during the 1980s, Letters from the Desk of Ronald Reagan traces history in the making.

Ten Letters written by Eli Saslow and has been published by Anchor this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-10-11 with Literary Collections categories.

Every day, President Obama read ten of the letters he received from citizens across America. Here are ten of those letters, along with President Obama's responses and the stories behind them. The letters come from people of all ages, walks of life, and political points of view. Some are heartbreaking, some angry, some hopeful. Indeed, Obama reads as many letters addressed “Dear Jackass” as “Dear Mr. President.” Eli Saslow, a young and rising star at the Washington Post, became fascinated by the power of these letters and set out to find the stories behind them. Through the lens of ten letters to which Obama responded personally, this exceptionally relevant and poignant book explores those individual stories, taking an in-depth look at the misfortunes, needs, opinions, and, yes, anger over the current state of the country that inspired ten people to put pen to paper. Surprisingly, what also emerges from these affecting personal narratives is a story about the astounding endurance and optimism of the American people. Ten Letters is an inspiring and important book about ordinary people and the issues they face every day—the very issues that are shaping America’s future. This is not an insider Washington book by any means, but a book for the times that tells the real American stories of today.
