"Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) remains one of the most popular artists of the early 20th century. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Tate Liverpool, a highlight of that city's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations and the first such show in the UK, Gustav Klimt explores the life and work of an intriguing figure at the heart of the cultural transformation of Vienna around 1900." "Central to the book is the first thorough examination of the relationship between Klimt's paintings and the work of his close friend the architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Reaching beyond the two-dimensional arts, it hails the advent of an all-inclusive design culture that embraced interiors, furniture, clothing and jewellery. Essays by leading scholars and curators consider key works, events and developments: the founding of the Viennese Secession, the inaugural display of the Beethoven Frieze, and a series of collaborative ventures in the creation of total domestic environments for the pursuit of 'modern life', among them the Villa Waerndorfer in Vienna and the Villa Primavesi in rural northern Moravia. In addition, Klimt is assessed as both an accomplished erotic draughtsman and a seductive landscape painter."--BOOK JACKET.

Style And Seduction written by Elana Shapira and has been published by Brandeis University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-22 with Architecture categories.

A recent surge of interest in Jewish patronage during the golden years of Vienna has led to the question, Would modernism in Vienna have developed in the same fashion had Jewish patrons not been involved? This book uniquely treats Jewish identification within Viennese modernism as a matter of Jews active fashioning of a new language to convey their aims of emancipation along with their claims of cultural authority. In this provocative reexamination of the roots of Viennese modernism, Elana Shapira analyzes the central role of Jewish businessmen, professionals, and writers in the evolution of the city's architecture and design from the 1860s to the 1910s. According to Shapira, these patrons negotiated their relationship with their non-Jewish surroundings and clarified their position within Viennese society by inscribing Jewish elements into the buildings, interiors, furniture, and design objects that they financed, produced, and co-designed. In the first book to investigate the cultural contributions of the banker Eduard Todesco, the steel tycoon Karl Wittgenstein, the textile industrialist Fritz Waerndorfer, the author Peter Altenberg, the tailor Leopold Goldman, and many others, Shapira reconsiders theories identifying the crisis of Jewish assimilation as a primary creative stimulus for the Jewish contribution to Viennese modernism. Instead, she argues that creative tensions between Jews and non-Jews - patrons and designers who cooperated and arranged well-choreographed social encounters with one another - offer more convincing explanations for the formation of a new semantics of modern Viennese architecture and design than do theories based on assimilation. This thoroughly researched and richly illustrated book will interest scholars and students of Jewish studies, Vienna and Viennese culture, and modernism.

Makers Of Modern Architecture Volume Iii written by Martin Filler and has been published by New York Review of Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-25 with Architecture categories.

An invaluable guide to lives and work of Frank Gehry, Atoni Gaudí, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Maya Lin, and other important figures of 20th and 21st century architecture. Martin Filler's "contribution to both architecture criticism and general readers' understanding is invaluable," according to Publishers Weekly. This latest installment in his acclaimed Makers of Modern Architecture series again demonstrates his unparalleled skill in explaining the revolutionary changes that have reshaped the built environment over the past century and a half. These studies of more than two dozen master builders--women and men, celebrated and obscure, idealists and opportunists--range from the environmental pioneer Frederick Law Olmsted and the mystical eccentric Antoni Gaudí to the present-day visionaries Frank Gehry and Maya Lin. Filler's broad knowledge embraces everything from the glittering Viennese luxury of Josef Hoffmann to the heavy-duty construction of the New Brutalists, from the low-cost postwar suburbs of the Levitt Brothers to today's super-tall condo towers on Manhattan's Billionaire's Row. Sometimes the interplay of social and political forces leads to dark results, as with Hitler's favorite architect, Albert Speer, and interior designer, Gerdy Troost. More often, though, heroic figures including Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, and Lina Bo Bardi offer uplifting inspiration for the future of the one art form we all live with--and in--every day.

"Klimt's artistic vision pushed the boundaries of art at the turn of the last century. His unparalleled ability to merge the decorative arts with painting led him to create brilliant and glittering works studded with jewel-like motifs; and his richly patterned landscapes and portrayals of embracing figures and elegant women are among the most spellbinding images in the history of art" "Gathered here are essays by eminent scholars Colin B. Bailey, Marian Bisanz-Prakken, Emily Braun, Jane Kallir, and Peter Vergo that explore the extent and context of the artist's oeuvre. The full-color plates are illuminated by individual commentaries and accompanied by black-and-white comparative illustrations. In addition, an illustrated chronology traces Klimt's life and the milieu in which he worked." "With nearly two hundred color plates of Klimt's most popular images, as well as rarely published drawings and period photographs, this lavish book, which accompanies a major exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, pays tribute to the unique style of this artist, one of the most important and revolutionary figures of the late nineteenth century."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
