First published in 1921, “The Princess of the School” is a classic school girl's story by master and pioneer of the Genre, Angela Brazil. As with all of Brazil's work, it is a stand-alone tale of a young girl's experiences living and studying in a traditional English girls-only boarding school. Angela Brazil (1868 – 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: “The School in the Forest” (1944), “Three Terms at Uplands” (1945), “The School on the Loch” (1946). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

The Princess of the School by Angela Brazil This book is half school story and half family story, the first half being more successful in my opinion. There are the usual Brazilian touches (names, love of nature, crazy theories and chapters taken up by girls who write stories or poems and read them). The school is selective, with about twenty boarders headed by a Miss Walters. The dorms are named after Colors and the girls in the Blue Dormitory call it the Blue Grotto. Two of its residents are Ingletons. Orphaned by the drowning Titanic (which dates the story from 1922-3 to 1923-4 by my calculations), they and their brothers were taken to nearby Cheverley Chase by their grandfather. Their cousin Clare stepped in to take care of them. Not only is he at home, but it is assumed that their older brother Everard will inherit. He assures his sisters that he will watch over them in a rather noble manner, but it turns out that "the young squire" was too presumptuous. Because when his grandfather suddenly dies, it turns out that Leslie, the only child of Mr. Ingleton's eldest son, previously easily overlooked as a baby in a photograph, must inherit. Everard, around seventeen, vows to leave the Chase when he finds out, without even staying for his grandfather's funeral. But Leslie is truly Carmel - the titular princess - a half-Italian who is brought somewhat reluctantly to her English heritage by Cousin Clare. Homesick for Sicily and her family there, she makes no complaints and tries to befriend the Ingletons. Dulcie, at least, is happy to do so, while older sister Lilias feels a little bad for Everard's name ...

Angela Brazil (1868-1947) was the first of the British writers of "modern" School Girls' Stories genre - written from the characters' point of view. Along with her sister Amy, Angela then studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art in London. She was quite late in taking up writing, developing a strong interest in Welsh mythology, and at first wrote a few magazine articles on mythology and nature. It was possibly thanks to her sister Amy that she finally began work on a novel at the age of 35. Exceptionally with respect to many of her contemporaries writing in this vein, Brazil did not write any books in a series - each stood on its own with different characters every time. These were considered to deal accurately and sympathetically with the highs and lows in the lives of middle-class schoolgirls, including the tangle of emotional friendships. Her works include: The New Girl at St. Chad's (1911), For the Sake of the School (1915), The Luckiest Girl in the School (1916) and The Jolliest School of All (1922).
