Whether viewed as extreme skepticism or enlightened common sense, the writings of Berkeley are a major influence on modern philosophy. Bishop Berkeley (1685-1753) was one of the great British empirical philosophers. He believed that the existence of material objects depends on their being perceived and The Principles of Human Knowledge sets out this denial of non-mental material reality. At first his views were unfavorably received by the London intelligentsia, and the entertaining Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous are a clarification of the Realist argument and a response to accusations of atheism and skepticism. In the nineteenth century John Stuart Mill wrote that he considered Berkeley's work to be of "greatest philosophic genius," and it is true to say that its Immaterialism has influenced many recent philosophers.

Berkeley's idealism started a revolution in philosophy. As one of the great empiricist thinkers he not only influenced British philosophers from Hume to Russell and the logical positivists in the twentieth century, he also set the scene for the continental idealism of Hegel and even the philosophy of Marx. There has never been such a radical critique of common sense and perception as that given in Berkeley's Principles of Human Knowledge (1710). His views were met with disfavour, and his response to his critics was the Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous. This edition of Berkeley's two key works has an introduction which examines and in part defends his arguments for idealism, as well as offering a detailed analytical contents list, extensive philosophical notes and an index. George Berkeley was an Irish Philosopher who is best known for putting forward the idea of subjective idealism. "Principles of Human Knowledge" is one of Berkeley's best known works and in it Berkeley expounds upon this idea of subjective idealism, which in other words is the idea that all of reality, as far as humans are concerned, is simply a construct of the way our brains perceive and according to Berkeley no other sense of reality matters beyond that which we perceive. First published in 1710, "Principles of Human Knowledge", met with criticism by such important figures as John Locke. In response to this criticism Berkeley published a rebuttal in 1713, "Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous", to address the chief objections to his arguments. Presented as a discussion between Philonous, who represents Berkeley's ideas, and Hylas, who represents Berkeley's opponents, "Three Dialogues" explores the philosophical concepts of conceptual relativity, conceivability, and phenomenalism. Fascinating metaphysical expositions, these two important works by George Berkeley are must reads for any student of philosophy. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

Irish-born philosopher George Berkeley developed a radical theory of human knowledge that he called "immaterialism." Put simply, it was Berkeley's belief that most objects that the human mind perceives as real do not actually exist. Following the back-and-forth conversational style of Socrates, Berkeley sets forth his innovative ideas in dialogue form in this text.
