From the depths of a Roman prison, words of encouragement and instruction from the great Apostle Paul were sent in a series of letters to communities throughout the Roman Empire. St. Paul may have been fettered and shackled to a series of Roman guards, but the Word he preached remained unfettered and free. This volume contains commentaries on the epistles that St. Paul wrote while in prison to the Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon.About the Orthodox Bible Study Companion Series:This commentary was written for your grandmother. And for your plumber, your banker, and the girl who serves you French Fries at the nearby McDonald's. That is, it was written for the average layperson, for the nonprofessional who feels a bit intimidated by the presence of copious footnotes, long bibliographies, and all those other things which so enrich the lives of academics. It is written for the pious Orthodox layman who is mystified by such things as Source Criticism, but who nonetheless wants to know what the Scriptures mean.

The book of Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon are the prison epistles of Paul. This is an expositional, biblical teaching, and devotional guide to help readers encounter the God of the Word through the Word of God. Hebrew 4:12, "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart". 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. Paul's prison epistles of Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon contain important teachings to counter false teachers and early Gnosticism. They are very applicable to our modern church because there are many false teachers and prophets who preach corrupt doctrines today. The author has given a clear background and simple explanations of every passage in Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon. At the end of each lesson, he gives a devotional application and prayer. There are 50 lessons that can be used as a bible study guide over 50 weeks. Any reader who goes through this study guide carefully will gain a good foundational understanding of Paul's prison epistles, Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians, and Philemon.

"The Prison Letters will explore the four books written by Paul while in prison in Rome: Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. According to the dating of the Apostle Paul's second and third missionary journeys, he was probably arrested in Jerusalem about A.D. 58. Festus kept Paul imprisoned in Caesarea for two years (Acts 24:27) before he appealed to Caesar and was placed on a ship for Rome. The voyage was interrupted by a shipwreck, so Paul reached Rome as a prisoner and began writing from there about A.D. 61 (or even A.D. 64). Acts 28:30-31 tells us Paul was imprisoned in Rome "two whole years." The Prison Epistles were written during this time."
