In this era of computer information and credit cards, Eaton asks us to consider a national ID card. His "debate'' includes the views of both proponents and the opposition. The thought of such a card conjures up images of Orwellian totalitarian states, so opponents such as the ACLU see it as a potential vehicle of repression. Eaton, however, ar gues that there is already plenty of information about us available via banks, credit cards, and so on. He sees a national ID card as a way of overcoming abuses by providing better protection of the individual than, for example, easily counterfeited social security cards. Likewise, he argues that the fraudulent use of credit cards would not be so easy if they were backstopped with a tamper-proof national ID. The card would also limit welfare and other entitlements fraud. To him, the advantages far outweigh the risks. Highly recommended. Privacy In Peril written by James B. Rule and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-25 with Social Science categories.

This probing account of the erosion of privacy in America shows that we are often unwitting, if willing, accomplices, providing personal data in exchange for security or convenience. The author shows that the personal data that we make available to virtually any organization for virtually any purpose is apt to surface elsewhere, applied to utterly different purposes. As long as we willingly accept the pursuit of profit or cutting government costs as sufficient reason for intensified scrutiny over our lives, then privacy will remain endangered.

Who Goes There?: Authentication Through the Lens of Privacy explores authentication technologies (passwords, PKI, biometrics, etc.) and their implications for the privacy of the individuals being authenticated. As authentication becomes ever more ubiquitous, understanding its interplay with privacy is vital. The report examines numerous concepts, including authentication, authorization, identification, privacy, and security. It provides a framework to guide thinking about these issues when deciding whether and how to use authentication in a particular context. The book explains how privacy is affected by system design decisions. It also describes government's unique role in authentication and what this means for how government can use authentication with minimal invasions of privacy. In addition, Who Goes There? outlines usability and security considerations and provides a primer on privacy law and policy.

The Privacy Fallacy written by Ignacio Cofone and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-30 with Law categories.

Our privacy is besieged by tech companies. Companies can do this because our laws are built on outdated ideas that trap lawmakers, regulators, and courts into wrong assumptions about privacy, resulting in ineffective legal remedies to one of the most pressing concerns of our generation. Drawing on behavioral science, sociology, and economics, Ignacio Cofone challenges existing laws and reform proposals and dispels enduring misconceptions about data-driven interactions. This exploration offers readers a holistic view of why current laws and regulations fail to protect us against corporate digital harms, particularly those created by AI. Cofone then proposes a better response: meaningful accountability for the consequences of corporate data practices, which ultimately entails creating a new type of liability that recognizes the value of privacy.
