Excerpt from The Problem of Nervous Breakdown The concern alike of doctors, nurses, social workers, care committees, schoolmasters, military authorities, prison officials, and others who have frequently before them questions which can only be efficiently answered in the light of some understanding of its various bearings the problem of nervous breakdown is to-day of great importance. Hence, anyone who has had special opportunities of studying the mind, and nervous system in health and in disorder may well feel desirous of placing his experiences and conclusions before the widest possible circle just now. The kind reception of my earlier work, Nerves and the Nervous - out of print for some time since - has encouraged me to write this book, the purpose of which is to review the problem as it affects the individual and as it concerns the State; to discuss the origin of the more common disorders, and to indicate in what directions it is possible for us to redress the balance in favour of nerve and efficiency. Throughout I have particularly borne in mind the difficulties of the family doctor, the trained nurse, and the anxious relative upon whose shoulders falls the grave responsibility of bringing back those stricken in "nerve" to useful life and work. 1973 marked the end of the 1960s and the birth of a new cultural sensibility. A year of shattering political crisis, 1973 was defined by defeat in Vietnam, Roe v. Wade, the oil crisis and the Watergate hearings. It was also a year of remarkable creative ferment. From landmark movies such as The Exorcist, Mean Streets, and American Graffiti to seminal books such as Fear of Flying and Gravity's Rainbow, from the proto-punk band the New York Dolls to the first ever reality TV show, The American Family, the cultural artifacts of the year reveal a nation in the middle of a serious identity crisis. 1973 Nervous Breakdown offers a fever chart of a year of uncertainty and change, a year in which post-war prosperity crumbled and modernism gave way to postmodernism in a lively and revelatory analysis of one of the most important periods in the second half of the 20th century.

Lorna Martin's life is in chaos and she needs to make some big changes. Egged on by her friends, she signs up for the talking cure: a year of therapy with the frosty Dr J. Along the way, she catches sight of the holy grail of true love in the shape of the gorgeous Dr McDreamy. But will Lorna find her own happy ending? With support (and not a little exasperation) from her friends and long-suffering sister, some serious setting-the-world-to-rights sessions involving too many bottles of wine, and the help of her inscrutable shrink, Lorna feels she might be getting her life together. Revealing, intimate and highly entertaining, Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown is a must-read for any woman who loves the idea of being in love and worries about settling for second best.

Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully written by Isabel Clarke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-08 with Psychology categories.

Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully introduces the Comprehend, Cope and Connect (CCC) approach, developed and evaluated within mental health services, to a wider audience who need to understand mental health issues, whether for themselves or to support others. The book deconstructs and normalizes mental breakdown, starting from the individual’s inner experience, leading to practical ways of helping people out of distress and impaired functioning, towards the realization of their whole potential. It is based on an understanding of connections in the brain founded in cognitive science, which explains how human functioning can easily go astray. CCC provides a compelling rationale for putting mindfulness at the heart of the solution, along with other ways of coping with emotions and changing behaviour. The approach is brought to life through three illustrative case histories, giving a representative and realistic insight into both the experience of the individual and the workings of the system. Meeting Mental Breakdown Mindfully will help mental health professionals and those in related fields identify more accurately what people in their organization or under their care are going through.

Jonathan Miller is a British journalist who moved with his wife and two children to the picturesque village of Caux, in the Languedoc coastal region of France, in 2000. In 2014, he was elected a local councillor to the village. This is his declaration on the state of everything that is annoying about beautiful France, including for good measure how the French are failing to save what is good about the place. It may cost him his councillorship, but at least he will have spoken the truth!
