'Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man could doubt it?' Philosophy is the attempt to answer such ultimate questions, not carelessly and dogmatically, as we might deal with them in ordinary life, but critically, after analysing how and why the questions arise and clarifying the assumptions and concepts on which they are based. This classic work, first published in 1912, has never been supplanted as an approachable introduction to the theory of philosophical enquiry. It gives Russell's views on such subjects as the distinction between appearance and reality, the existence and nature of matter, idealism, knowledge by acquaintance and by description, induction, and the limits and value of philosophical knowledge. This edition includes an introduction by John Skorupski contextualizing Russell's work, and a guide to further reading.

The Problems of Philosophy is one of Bertrand Russell's attempts to create a brief and accessible guide to the problems of philosophy. Focusing on problems he believes will provoke positive and constructive discussion, Russell concentrates on knowledge rather than metaphysics. If it is uncertain that external objects exist, how can we then have knowledge of them but by probability. There is no reason to doubt the existence of external objects simply because of sense data. Russell guides the reader through his famous 1910 distinction between "knowledge by acquaintance and knowledge by description" and introduces important theories of Plato, Aristotle, René Descartes, David Hume, John Locke, Immanuel Kant, Georg Hegel and others to lay the foundation for philosophical inquiry by general readers and scholars alike.

"The Saddharma-Puṇḍarīka (The Lotus of the True Law), one of the Mahayana sutras, is perhaps the single most important Mahayana Buddhist work. Composed originally in India, some sections written as early as the beginning of the Christian era, the Lotus is held in enormous esteem by the Northern schools of Buddhism and by Chinese and Japanese Buddhists, particularly Tendai and later developments. Described as "the most eminent" of all the sutras, "the crown jewel" in which "all Buddha-laws are succinctly taught," the Lotus is a keystone in the education of every serious Buddhist. This sutra is essentially a collection of responses, explanations, ex cathedra lectures, and the like, bearing chiefly upon metaphysical issues: the nature of Buddhahood, the concept of nirvana, the Bodhisattva ideal, the rewards of the faithful, and other theoretical matters, that have become essential dogma in all Buddhist schools that have since arisen. A transfiguration of the traditional Buddha-situation is presented: the historical Buddha, the Tathagata or Sakyamuni, is seen in his eternal, supernatural aspect; he sits surrounded by an array of gods, arahats, demons, bodhisattvas, gandharvas, monks and nuns--all eager to hear the infinitely wise utterances of the Great Teacher. The revelations are made sometimes by Sakyamuni, addressing his historical sangha, including Ananda, Sariputra, Kasyapa, et al., and at other times by the Buddhas of the past and the future, Manjusri and Maitreya. This edition contains the complete translation of the Lotus, rendered from Sanskrit by Professor Kern. He has also written a critical introduction to the work and has clarified and supplemented the text by means of numerous footnotes." -- Publisher's description

What is truth? How should we define it? Should we define it christologically as Jesus did when he revealed himself to Thomas as the embodiment of truth, or should we appeal to philosophy for help? This book explores possible answers to these questions. More specifically, the book offers a brief survey of how different philosophical theories have attempted to define truth. After finding them somewhat incomplete, the book shows how an adequate account of truth is given by the Judeo-Christian tradition’s view of omniscience. By drawing from the rich tradition of the church fathers, the book notes how naturalistic views of truth fail to account for the existence of truth prior to the evolution of the human mind. This problem, however, is a non-issue for a theistic account of truth and makes a strong case for the existence of objective truth even before the human mind was designed.

Thomas Aquinas (1224/6-1274) was one of the greatest of the medieval philosophers. His Summa Theologiae is his most important contribution to Christian theology, and one of the main sources for his philosophy. This volume offers most of the Summa's first 26 questions, including all of those on the existence and nature of God. Based on the 1960 Blackfriars translation, this version has been extensively revised by Brian Davies and also includes an introduction by Brian Leftow which places the questions in their philosophical and historical context. The result is an accessible and up-to-date edition of Aquinas' thoughts on the nature and existence of God, both of which have continuing relevance for the philosophy of religion and Christian theology.

"Cassirer employs his remarkable gift of lucidity to explain the major ideas and intellectual issues that emerged in the course of nineteenth century scientific and historical thinking. The translators have done an excellent job in reproducing his clarity in English. There is no better place for an intelligent reader to find out, with a minimum of technical language, what was really happening during the great intellectual movement between the age of Newton and our own."-- New York Times. -- Publisher description.
