Taking a very "practical" "how to be a psychotherapist" approach, this overview of the process of counseling provides information that is "fundamental" to counseling, but "not" representative of any one theoretical orientation. Concise, yet thorough--and accessible to novice and seasoned professional alike--it explores counseling basics (e.g., skills, relationship building) as well as specific populations (e.g., groups, clients in crisis, couples and diverse populations). Foundation skills. The initial interview. The early phase. The middle phase. The final phase. The client in crisis. Groups and group therapy. Couple therapy. Dealing with diversity. Care and feeding of therapists. For new and seasoned professionals in counsel and psychotherapy.

The focus of this new edition is on counseling and psychotherapy, and its goals are to renew interest in the person-centered approach in the U.S., make a significant contribution to extending person-centered theory and practice, and promote fruitful dialogue and further development of person-centered theory. The text presents and clarifies the following main topics: the rationale for an eclectic application of person-centered counseling, the rationale and process for reflecting clients' feelings, the importance of theory as the foundation for the counseling process, the importance of values and their influence on the counseling relationship, the modern person- centered counselor's role, the essential characteristics of a person-centered counseling relationship, the group counseling movement and the person-centered perspective, the application of person-centeredness through play therapy, the difficulties and opportunities surrounding evaluation, a person-centered perspective on the process of counselor education, and therapeutic opportunities available outside the field of counseling. These discussions serve as a transition from traditional interpretation of personcentered to an eclectic application of the viewpoint. The process of person-centered counseling has evolved over the years and this comprehensive book contributes to that evolution. It represents the status of person-centered counseling while also identifying ideas which can influence its future.

`[The client material]... stimulated thought and reflection... Clark presented a large number of very tricky case studies and illustrated all manner of different and interesting ways of responding to clients who find it difficult to engage with the process of counselling. Furthermore, this is done in the framework of a model of counselling which integrates humanistic, psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural theories in a most interesting and convincing way. In the end, I learned quite a lot and found myself pondering the case histories days later' - Counselling, The Journal of the British Association for Counselling The understanding of defence mechanisms is vital to counsellors and psychotherapists, particula

Toward Effective Counseling And Psychotherapy written by Charles B. Truax and has been published by Transaction Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-01 with Psychology categories.

The field of counseling and psychotherapy has for years presented the puzzling spectacle of unabating enthusiasm for forms of treatment whose effectiveness cannot be objectively demonstrated. With few exceptions, statistical studies have consistently failed to show that any form of psychotherapy is followed by significantly more improvement than would be caused by the mere passage of an equivalent period of time. Despite this, practitioners of various psychotherapeutic schools have remained firmly convinced that their methods are effective. Many recipients of these forms of treatment also believe that they are being helped. The series of investigations reported in this impressive book resolve this paradoxical state of affairs. The investigators have overcome two major obstacles to progress in the past--lack of agreement on measures of improvement and difficulty of measuring active ingredients of the psychotherapy relationship. The inability of therapists of different theoretical persuasions to agree on criteria of improvement has made comparison of the results of different forms of treatment nearly impossible. The authors have solved this intractable problem by using a wide range of improvement measures and showing that, regardless of measures used in different studies, a significantly higher proportion of results favor their hypothesis than disregard it. Overall, this book represented a major advance at the time of its original publication and is of continuing importance. The research findings resolve some of the most stubborn research problems in psychotherapy, and the training program based on them points the way toward overcoming the shortage of psychotherapists. Charles B. Truax is, in addition to this book, author of Counseling and Psychotherapy: Process and Outcome, The Process of Group Psychotherapy: Relationships between Hypothesized Therapeutic Conditions and Intrapersonal Exploration, Toward a Tentative Measurement of the Central Therapeutic Ingredients, and Talking Won't Help: A Study of the Process and Outcome of Psychotherapy with Hospitalized Schizophrenics. Robert R. Carkhuff is president of Human Technology Inc. and chairman of Carkhuff Institute of Human Technology. He is the author of The Possibilities Leader, The Possibilities Mind, and Beyond Counseling and Therapy.
