Excerpt from The Process of Generalizing Abstraction, and Its Product, the General Concept The investigation which is here reported aims to make a con tribution to the psychology of generalizing abstraction and its final product, the general concept. In arranging our experiments, our essential purpose was to ensure the presence of a genuine process of generalizing abstraction; to provide favorable condi tions for an accurate introspective analysis and description of this process and its product; and then to obtain from a number of trained observers a complete and detailed account of the mental contents and factors involved in the process, and of the form in which the general concept which resulted from this process ap peared in consciousness. Our endeavor has been to throw light upon the following questions: What are the events which trans pire in an observer's consciousness after he'has been confronted with a task whose successful performance necessitates the act of generalizing abstraction? What is the form in consciousness of Of the general concept? Does this form vary, in proportion to the age and deep-rootedness of the concept? Does there exist in any or all Observers a specific consciousness of generality or of universality, when dealing with features which appear in every member of a group of objects? DO there exist marked individual differences in abstracting and in concept-form? If such differ emees exist, in what do they consist? The investigation was conducted in the Psychological Labora tory of Clark University, during the years 1912 and 1913. Throughout the experimentation, our first debt has been to Pro fessor J. W. Baird, who suggested the problem, and contributed generously of his time and energies both as advisor and as observer. It is a pleasure to take this opportunity of expressing our thanks to him, and to our other observers, whose patience and good will made the investigation possible. We are also indebted for many helpful suggestions and criticisms to Pro fessor Mary W. Calkins, to Dr. Ivy G. Campbell, and to Dr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Business Process Model Abstraction written by Sergey Smirnov and has been published by Universitätsverlag Potsdam this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Computers categories.

Business process management aims at capturing, understanding, and improving work in organizations. The central artifacts are process models, which serve different purposes. Detailed process models are used to analyze concrete working procedures, while high-level models show, for instance, handovers between departments. To provide different views on process models, business process model abstraction has emerged. While several approaches have been proposed, a number of abstraction use case that are both relevant for industry and scientifically challenging are yet to be addressed. In this paper we systematically develop, classify, and consolidate different use cases for business process model abstraction. The reported work is based on a study with BPM users in the health insurance sector and validated with a BPM consultancy company and a large BPM vendor. The identified fifteen abstraction use cases reflect the industry demand. The related work on business process model abstraction is evaluated against the use cases, which leads to a research agenda.

This study traces an important but largely overlooked conception of abstraction in art from its roots in eighteenth-century empirical epistemology to its application in the pursuit of ideal form from Joshua Reynolds to Piet Mondrian. Theorized by Enlightenment philosophy as a means of discovering ideal essence by purging natural form of its accidental and contingent qualities abstraction was a major focus of philosophical, scientific, and aesthetic discourse for more than one hundred fifty years, serving as the nucleus of fundamental debates about the philosophy of mind, the relationship between the Ancients and the Moderns, the nature of human racial and functional variety, the nature of God's creative ideas, the use of brushwork in painting, the validity of abstraction in art, and the visual appearance of ideal truth and beauty.

This volume contains the proceedings of SARA 2000, the fourth Symposium on Abstraction, Reformulations, and Approximation (SARA). The conference was held at Horseshoe Bay Resort and Conference Club, Lake LBJ, Texas, July 26– 29, 2000, just prior to the AAAI 2000 conference in Austin. Previous SARA conferences took place at Jackson Hole in Wyoming (1994), Ville d’Est ́erel in Qu ́ebec (1995), and Asilomar in California (1998). The symposium grewout of a series of workshops on abstraction, approximation, and reformulation that had taken place alongside AAAI since 1989. This year’s symposium was actually scheduled to take place at Lago Vista Clubs & Resort on Lake Travis but, due to the resort’s failure to pay taxes, the conference had to be moved late in the day. This mischance engendered eleventh-hour reformulations, abstractions, and resource re-allocations of its own. Such are the perils of organizing a conference. This is the ?rst SARA for which the proceedings have been published in the LNAI series of Springer-Verlag. We hope that this is a re?ection of the increased maturity of the ?eld and that the increased visibility brought by the publication of this volume will help the discipline grow even further. Abstractions, reformulations, and approximations (AR&A) have found - plications in a variety of disciplines and problems including automatic progr- ming, constraint satisfaction, design, diagnosis, machine learning, planning, qu- itative reasoning, scheduling, resource allocation, and theorem proving. The - pers in this volume capture a cross-section of these application domains.

Abstraction In Artificial Intelligence And Complex Systems written by Lorenza Saitta and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-05 with Computers categories.

Abstraction is a fundamental mechanism underlying both human and artificial perception, representation of knowledge, reasoning and learning. This mechanism plays a crucial role in many disciplines, notably Computer Programming, Natural and Artificial Vision, Complex Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Art, and Cognitive Sciences. This book first provides the reader with an overview of the notions of abstraction proposed in various disciplines by comparing both commonalities and differences. After discussing the characterizing properties of abstraction, a formal model, the KRA model, is presented to capture them. This model makes the notion of abstraction easily applicable by means of the introduction of a set of abstraction operators and abstraction patterns, reusable across different domains and applications. It is the impact of abstraction in Artificial Intelligence, Complex Systems and Machine Learning which creates the core of the book. A general framework, based on the KRA model, is presented, and its pragmatic power is illustrated with three case studies: Model-based diagnosis, Cartographic Generalization, and learning Hierarchical Hidden Markov Models.
