This book tells the story of diverse online creators – women, ethnic and racial minorities, queer folk and those from hardscrabble backgrounds – producing low budget, high cultural impact web-series which have disrupted longstanding white male domination of the film and TV industries. Author Guy Healy addresses four burning problems faced by creators in the context of digital disruption (along with potential solutions), namely: the sustainability of monetizing digital content and the rising possibility of middle-class artistic careers; algorithmic volatility; the difficulty of finding people to share jealously guarded industry knowledge as traditional craft-based mentoring and expertise-sharing mechanisms break down; and the lack of diversity and authenticity in high-profile storytelling. It includes nine case studies, five drawn from a second wave of outstanding YouTube-developed talent, transitioning to longer form narrative, most collaborating with established TV producers working across the divide between online and established television culture, and all from under-represented and/or minority backgrounds. The balance are film-school and industry professionals leveraging YouTube in the same way, including two Writers Guild of America new media award-winners. These storytellers leverage their social networks and chase sustainable careers by reaching audiences of subscription video-on-demand platforms and mainstream online broadcast in Australia and North America. The Production of Global Web-Series in a Networked Age is the first longitudinal study of this historic rapprochement between online and television cultures. Four of the cases are in Emmy-winning contexts, and one in an Emmy nominated context. Covering 2005–2021, the book reveals distinctive new forms of screen industry convergence with profound implications for creators’ careers, the screen industry in general, new media theory, and broader cultural and social change. The introduction and diffusion of international subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services in the 2010s represented the most significant disruption of established national broadcast and pay-TV ecologies in their long history. Using an in-depth Australian case study, this book narrates this profound period of proliferation. It also considers how incumbent commercial networks, pay-TV providers and public service broadcasters developed into online TV providers, albeit in assorted ways. In so doing, it conceives of the early impact of online TV (2015–2020) more broadly and acknowledges the role of both new and old TV players. The industry-wide shift towards online TV over this period also impacted existing television drama production cultures. SVOD services provided a fruitful avenue for the distribution of existing archives and slowly began to support the production of new Australian content with an increasingly global focus. However, the formal arrival of online TV certainly did not usher in the boom in original local television drama many anticipated. Pivoting and Producing for Online TV: Australia's Transition advances the macro-analysis of television production strategies. Fringe to Famous examines exchange between small scenes of cultural production and mainstream institutions and markets. Drawing on Australian examples in music, streetwear, comedy, screen and digital games, it argues that there has been much greater crossover between the two than is generally recognized. The book resists a tendency to represent fringe and mainstream as abstract opposites, bringing a focus instead to concrete historical formations. It offers an alternative both to romantic celebrations of a 'pure' fringe – discredited now by half a century of critical responses to the counterculture – and to an increasingly hardened anti-romantic reaction. Drawing on extensive original interviews, Fringe to Famous offers an overview of transformations in Australian culture since the 1980s, concluding with suggestions for cultural policy 'after the creative industries'. It proposes an idea of 'generative hybridity' between fringe and mainstream that allows us to imagine new possibilities for arts and culture in the 2020s and beyond.
