The industry was determined to be "locomotive sector" in the planned development period starting in 1960 in Turkey and long-term targets have been set such as providing economic balance, realizing economic and social development. But after 1980's, because of the fast industrialization and urbanization some environmental problems emerged in the Turkish cities. So, in industrial development, the Organized Industrial Zones implementations were started to discipline the industrial areas, contribute to planned development of the city and reduce the environmental effects of the industry. Kocaeli is the most industrialized city which is situated in the east and 90 km far from Istanbul in Turkey. Kocaeli has always been a center of attraction for industrial investments due to its position on the road, sea and railway networks connecting Europe to Anatolia and near the major cities as Bursa and Istanbul. Today, there are 13 Organized Industrial Zones in Kocaeli. But these 13 Organized Industrial Zones are not efficient and effective in the industrial development. A lot of industrial establishments have still located in the city. The aim of this study is to determine the profile of the 13 Organized Industrial Zones in Kocaeli by exploring and comparing their locations, sectors, capacities, services and infrastructures. This profile will be helpful to develop the displacement demands and preferences of the industrial establishments and the industrial sustainability in Kocaeli.

It has been observed that in the industrial sector parallel to the development of the flexible production process, the tendency of firm aggregation increases, especially in countries where the traditional modes of production are valid as it is in Turkey. Organized industrial zone (OIZ) enables firms to select appropriate locations for establishment, discover new opportunities and obtain competitive capacity, leading many researchers to investigate the enterprises functioning in those areas, of their nature. In this frame, the scope of this study is to analyse the relations between social network approach, entrepreneurs and network activities, social capital components and firm novelty, and social capital. Within the scope of the research, a questionnaire was carried out by face-to-face interviews with 121 OIZ firms while the number of interviews with firms from a similar factor, which are not active in OIZ, is 116. The results of the research support the fact that the social capital components are effective in the innovation of the firms. It was found that the social capital indicators are highly important for OIZ firms and that there are important differences between firms inside and outside of OIZ, in terms of innovation.

Many middle-income countries (MICs) that saw rapid growth in the 1990s and 2000s have been facing the danger of remaining in the 'middle-income trap' unless they shift from labour-intensive, low value-added production to higher value-added activities that require more advanced skills. Intermediate skills and vocational education and training (VET) systems that generate these skills are critical for addressing the challenges for MICs in achieving high-road development. This book examines the skill systems in Mexico and Turkey, with a focus on auto parts producers, and the implications of these systems for these countries' development. It adopts a multi-layered understanding of the term 'skill system', which comprises firm-level hiring and training practices as well as the national and global dynamics that influence these practices. Drawing on discussions around globalization and the convergence of economic activity vs. national institutions and divergence, as well as interviews with auto parts producers and stakeholders of the skill systems, the book examines how the participation of local firms in global supply chains and these firms' institutional environment affect the firm-level skilling practices. It highlights key differences in the role of the state in the skills systems of Mexico and Turkey and investigates the implications of skilling practices for the high/low-road development prospects of both nations.
