Excerpt from The Prophet of Nazareth This volume is not the manifesto of a school, a sect, or a party. The author acknowledges with gratitude the helpful suggestions and inspiring influence of every great thinker and every faithful worker with whom he has come in contact. But he has endeavored, so far as possible, to see with his own eyes the character of each important problem, and to present in his own language, simply and unequivocally, the conclusions to which many years of study and reflection have led him. In attempting to make a comprehensive statement within narrow limits of space, he has often been obliged to give the bare results where it would have been a pleasure to outline the course of protracted investigation. More frequently, a few suggestions of decisive facts will convince the reader familiar with the problems that nothing has been taken for granted without fresh examination. Wherever it seemed necessary to indicate carefully the grounds for a view not yet fully understood or generally adopted, the author has had no hesitancy in doing so at sufficient length. Particularly is this the case with the question as to the origin and significance of the term "son of man." As the author was the first to suggest that Jesus never used this term concerning himself, either to claim Messiahship in any sense, or to hint that he was "a mere man," or "the true man," but in some pregnant utterances used it in reference to "man" in general, his duties, rights, and privileges, he has felt it incumbent upon himself to attempt such a re-interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus in the light of this conviction as has been urgently and rightly demanded. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. Excerpt from Nazareth: Its Life and Lessons While, accordingly, he has thoughtfully dwelt on these disclosures, and trustfully 'pondered them in his heart, ' the meaning of revealed facts and princi ples has been enlarged within his View: the divine communications have grown more living and sig nificant. It was thus with the oral revelation which God made in the earliest ages to His ser vants, and with the truths that have been conveyed by the ordinances which He instituted. While, in all essential respects, the meaning of those communications was apprehended by seers and prophets from the first, it was ever enlarging and deepening in their consciousness.
