Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel Thus capable of interpreting both by his life and his message the divine will. The prophets were not merely men of genius, who thus became leaders of their race. No theory which omits the element of inspiration in their lives can account for the facts. They were men who wrought and spake as they were impelled by the Holy Spirit. Yet, possessing this controlling purpose, they seemingly acted with entire freedom in their choice of methods, and each maintained throughout his own characteristics. Excerpt from Prophecy and the Prophets in Ancient Israel The Jew was a person of no political importance and of no social standing. He was almost as unpopular in the Roman world as he is in Eastern Europe to-day, though not equally persecuted. He inhabited a little strip of land between the Mediterranean and the Syrian desert, and for six centuries had only intermittently enjoyed an approximate national independence. He was to the fore in commerce then as now - he had little else to live for' besides his faith - but political influence was almost denied him, and political dominance was a dream which appeared even to those who dreamed it to demand a more amazing divine interference with humanity than the world had ever' witnessed. Yet Jesus was a Jew and not a Roman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel and Their Place in History: To the Close of the Eighth Century B. C IT is not too much to say that the present work, though it only now appears in a second edition, has achieved one of the greatest known literary successes in the department of theology. It was, on its first appearance, eagerly bought and as eagerly read, and, though it has long been out of print, the demand for it has never ceased. The beloved and admired author resisted the temptation of simply reprinting it, and hoped - but hoped in vain - for leisure and strength to revise it. It would, no doubt, have cost him more labour than the companion-volume of Lectures, which he issued in a conscientiously revised edition in 1893, for reasons which the reader who is unfamiliar with the subject will see when he has finished this Intro duction. And precisely for this reason I lament, as much as any young student, that it was not vouchsafed to the highly gifted author to revise his own work. And now that the publishers have determined on. Excerpt from The Prophets and Prophecy in Israel: An Historical and Critical Enquiry English public. I imagined to myself readers who did not favour the modern, organic view of prophecy, but who, at the same time were not disinclined to become acquainted with it and to weigh its claims. I have, therefore, throughout taken as my point of departure the traditional - which at the same time still continue to be the most widely diffused - ideas, subjected them to a severe objective criticism, and proceeded to build upon the results which were thus obtained. At the same time, I have endeavoured to proceed methodically, and to justify step by step the course of the investigation. Its courses embrace thorough correspondence work leading to University credit, and reading and study courses which require less rigid work. The accompanying course belongs to the Outline bible-study Series in which eleven subjects are listed on a preceding page. This course follows the general method of all of the series, giving a daily assignment for reading from the Bible, but requiring no books of reference. Excerpt from Stories of the Prophets: Before the Exile The company of inspired men, commonly known as the prophets of Israel, were the unique product of the Jewish religious genius. They were pre - eminently preachers of righteousness. Fearless and undaunted, they told the house of Israel their sins and the house of Jacob their transgressions. They contemplated the facts of life from the highest point of view. For them religion and morality were blended, ethics and politics were one. Theirs was peculiarly a social mes sage; the demand for justice underlies all their thinking and speaking. They had a veritable passion for righteousness; through all the ages their words have been torches lighting the way of men struggling upward towards the truth. Excerpt from The Prophets of Israel: From the Eighth to the Fifth Century; Their Faith and Their Message There is perhaps, at the present day, no subject of biblical study which possesses more interest for the lay public than Prophecy, a fact which must be most gratifying to writers on this subject, though it carries with it one serious difficulty. For there is also probably no subject of biblical study which engages the attention of the specialists to the extent that Prophecy does; and a presentation which would fill the needs of the one class of readers would hardly meet the requirements of the other. I cannot claim to have solved this difficulty. I am aware that there are parts of the present volume which the lay reader may prefer to pass over, and that there are other parts which may seem commonplace to the scholar, but I believe that this is almost inevitable in the present stage of biblical criticism. The general reader will probably find the first and the last chapter most readable, as these were originally lectures delivered before a lay audience, the first as an exposition of the Faith of the Prophets, the second as an exposition of their Message. These lectures, which were delivered in Albany, N. Y. in January, 1910, at the request of my friend and former pupil, Rev. S. H. Goldenson, I was strongly urged to publish at the time. They are here substantially unchanged, though the second has been necessarily somewhat enlarged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
