Schizophrenia, described by Karl Jaspers "the enigma of humani ty itself;' has lost little of its enigmatic quality despite intensive research efforts alI over the world. Indeed, the results of in numerable neurobiological, psychological, and psychoanalytic studies have furthered confusion rather than an understanding of the issues. The split, rooted in the tradition of the last century, be tween those studying the "psyche" and those more interested in "organic" explanations continues to grow wider. National and in ternational classification schemes, ever being revised and ever in need of further revision, are but a last helpless attempt to stern the tide of confusion. In view of the many and complex factors involved in the etiology of schizophrenia, it is very tempting to seek relief in one-dimen sional explanatory models. But too often, having developed such a model, one becomes inclined to shut one eye or the other (or both?) and entrench oneself in what appears to be afirm, unshak able position. It therefore seemed time to step aside and take stock of the present focuses of research and scientific viewpoints, to try and see whether it might be possible to build bridges between the various lines of research into and theories about the etiology and treatment of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling psychosis, which is an impairment of thinking in which the interpretation of reality is abnormal. Psychosis is a symptom of a disordered brain. Approximately 1 percent of the population worldwide develops schizophrenia during their lifetime. Although schizophrenia affects men and women with equal frequency, the disorder often appears earlier in men, usually in the late teens or early twenties, than in women, who are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties. People with schizophrenia often suffer symptoms such as hearing internal voices not heard by others, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. The current evidence concerning the causes of schizophrenia is a mosaic. It is quite clear that multiple factors are involved. These include changes in the chemistry of the brain, changes in the structure of the brain, and genetic factors. Viral infections and head injuries may also play a role. New molecular tools and modern statistical analyses are allow focusing in on particular genes that might make people more susceptible to schizophrenia by affecting, for example, brain development or neurotransmitter systems governing brain functioning. State-of-the-art imaging techniques are being used to study the living brain. They have recently revealed specific, subtle abnormalities in the structure and function of the brains of patients with schizophrenia. In other imaging studies, early biochemical changes that may precede the onset of disease symptoms have been noted, prompting examination of the neural circuits that are most likely to be involved in producing those symptoms. This new book presents the newest in-depth research from around the world on schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia written by Andrew Crider and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-10 with Psychology categories.

Originally published in 1979, this introductory text approaches schizophrenia as a complex biopsychological condition. Drawing from the fields of descriptive psychiatry, psychopathology, neurochemistry, genetics, life history research, and institutional practice, the author details our increasing understanding of the nature and etiology of schizophrenia at the time. He organizes and evaluates current concepts and findings from these areas, with a view towards integration. This volume was intended to serve as an introduction for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, as well as for students in psychiatry, psychiatric nursing, and clinical social work. The author assumes that a comprehensive understanding of schizophrenia requires a synthesis of findings from diverse fields and emphasizes the compatibility of, and points of contact between, clinical psychological, and biological approaches. Here is a text that introduces the reader to this challenging subject and to contributions from a variety of allied disciplines. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Schizophrenia is being increasingly viewed as a neurological disorder. The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia addresses the key questions in modern schizophrenia research. How do abnormalities of the brain produce the characteristic signs and symptoms of this most severe and mysterious mental malady? Where are these abnormalities? How do they develop? How can we detect them? What clinical and cognitive effects do they have? This new book is the first of its kind to tackle these questions in a systematic way from a number of allied perspectives: from phenomenology to physiology, animal behaviour to metacognition and from PET scans to paper and pencil tests. A number of authors from the United Kingdom and the United States have made contributions; all are acknowledged experts in the field. The chapters each contain a concise review of the particular topic, empirical data and also a theoretical overview. The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia will be required reading for all serious students of schizophrenia from both medical and psychology backgrounds.
