Excerpt from The Psychological Bulletin, Vol. 1: Containing the Literature Section of the Psychological Review; December 15, 1904 I might go into much greater technical detail, and I might in particular make many a striking quotation. But I prefer to be exceedingly summary, and merely to call the reader's atten tion to the importance of this output of Chicago University. Taking it en gros, what strikes me most in it is the great sense of concrete reality with which it is filled. It seems a promising m'a media between the empiricist and transcendentalist ten dencies of our time. Like empiricism, it is individualistic and phenomenalistic; it places truth in rebus, and not ante rem. It resembles transcendentalism, on the other hand, in making value and fact inseparable, and in standing for continuities and pur poses in things. It employs the genetic method to which both schools are now accustomed. It coincides remarkably with the simultaneous movement in favor of pragmatism' or humanism' set up quite independently at Oxford by Messrs. Schiller and Sturt. It probably has a great future, and is certainly something of which Americans may be proud. Professor Dewey ought to gather into another volume his scattered essays and addresses on psychological and ethical topics, for now that his philosophy is systematically formulated, these throw a needed light. Excerpt from The Psychological Review, Vol. 1: 1895-96 Only when such an equation is determined will the foun dation be laid for the mathematical investigation of mental phenomena. For it is doubtful if exact methods can be applied to the study of mental relations, independent of physical phenomena, until the much Simpler problems of Psycho-physics have been solved.relations existing between the intensity, area and time of dermal stimuli, and the resultant sensations and perceptions. We will first, however, treat of dermal sensations with refer ence to the quality of the stimulus. In this way we shall be in a position to appreciate more fully the significance of the efiects of variations of the stimulus in quantity. Psychology considered as the science of human behavior is concerned with man's response to the impressions made upon him by objects, people, and events. They make up the situations that he meets. Behavior--the individual's way of dealing with these situations--if not a complete failure, results finally in some sort of adjustment to the conditions in which one lives; and this adjustment culminates in social and moral habits, in habits of work, in ways of thinking and acting; in short, in habits of life. And through all the adapting process runs the influence of physiological conditions, and the effect of their changes caused by the manner of life and the advance of years. The adjustment may be mechanical and rigid, insensible to misfits, without power to readjust as conditions alter; or, again, it may be flexible and adaptive--capable of new adjustments as circumstances change. This adjustment represents the capacity of man for achievement. It is his efficiency--the strategy and tactics of life. It is well, then, from time to time to take an inventory of stock and try to discover the significance of the facts and principles of human behavior which investigation has revealed. Concerning the more common matters of every-day life, however, psychologists have offered relatively little of interpretative value. Yet these experiences make up the day's work. They determine its quantity and quality. Much has been written about making others efficient, but comparatively little about one's own method of thinking, working, and acting. Yet knowing oneself reaches far into success and failure; and there is no other way of understanding the behavior of others. It is, therefore, in the hope of interpreting a few of these personal experiences of daily life that this book is written. The topics that could be discussed extend far beyond the limits of a single volume. The choice, of course, is largely personal, but the writer has tried to select types of conduct, as well as phases and causes of behavior, that are fundamental to thinking and acting, whether in the life of social intercourse or in the business and professional world. And, after all, thinking and acting determine achievement.

Excerpt from The Psychological Bulletin, 1907, Vol. 4: Containing the Literature Section of the Psychological Review The attitude of the psychologist towards his subject-matter seems to be less a question for debate or a theory for elaboration than for merly. In spite of the fact that the functional point of View seems to have almost completely won out, there continue efforts to be even more precise in the application of criteria to consciousness. Ostwald, for example, in his Cambridge address on Psychical Energy presents a restatement of his doctrine of energism in psychology. The value of a chemical philosophy for psychology is made to appear in the applica tion of energy, our 'best and largest concept, ' to the equation which consciousness seems to require. Every mental process takes up and consumes chemical and physical energy which otherwise disappears in a man's make-up. 'as this theory is the only one which opens a way to connect the inner and the outer world by a functional relation, it has a distinct advantage over the theory of psycho-physical parallel ism, which is no theory at all, but only an arbitrary declaration that no such functional relation exists.' Another effort which remains more pertinently within the field of psychology and thus is the more to be commended, is an analysis of the fundamental functions of conscious ness made by Warren.1 In order to avoid the partiality inevitable in the over-emphasis placed upon 'special adaptations to the environment in which conscious beings chance to be placed, ' he looks upon sensi bility, modification, differentiation, association and discrimination as basal functions to whose Operation every phenomenon of consciousness can be traced.' A possible feature of such an analysis is a more Vital reunion of the analytic and genetic standpoints. There can indeed be only one result from this general methodological' clearing of the field which has attracted so much attention of late, and that will be to give psychology greater integrity as an independent science.
