Excerpt from The Pulpit Tested: A Sermon Delivered at the Centennial Anniversary of the Congregational Church in Great Barrington, Dec. 23, 1843 Iwhen we wish to make our thoughts touch the heart, we borrow aid from scenes of distress. He who should paint the moth er fainting and sinking down on the rock, as her only son sank under the billows to rise no more, would understand human nature. Could the last shriek of agony which came from the drowning child be also painted, the picture would be more complete. The mournful songs of Jeremiah, which flowed from his harp while his land was in ruins, are full of what is tender, and simple as infancy. Oh! That my head were waters and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people. Moving Jesus beyond the Pulpit: Doing It the Community Way Can Help Church Growth describes the challenges facing Christianity and the church. Although these challenges are very significant, they help to boost the efforts of the present disciples of Christ to be good ambassadors to the world. What prompted the writing of this book is that author Sunday J. I. Etsekhume clamored for a dramatic change in the way some churches do outreach. Some churches only prefer to do outreach from the pulpit, but ignored the practice in the community where they are situated. The book also describes various ways in which the church can show love and care, which indicates the various ways that can portray the church healthiness. For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me, (Matthew 25:35-36). The book also argues against the idea that church leaders would not compromise their positions as spiritual leaders, due to financial insufficiencies, in order to become fleshy leaders. The arguments further center on how the church can do evangelism without jeopardizing church principles and some of the Christian rules of conduct. Finally, the book focuses on the pulpit, where sermons are preached without the preachers practicing what they preachedhypocrisy! Dr. Etsekhume has written an insightful, thoughtful, and thought-provoking rationale for getting back to basics in terms of the way the Church approaches ministry. Moving from pulpit to pew, from leadership to follow-ship, and from minister to member, Dr. Etsekhume identifies the spiritual, organizational, and interpersonal challenges facing the Church and recommends Scriptural principles for addressing them. By turns compassionate and passionate, Moving Jesus Beyond the Pulpit is a wonderful reminder of the restorative, renewing, and revitalizing power of Christ, both in the congregation and in the community at large. Minister Sonja A. West Associate Minister, Mariners Temple Baptist Church, New York, NY. Dr. Sunday Etsekhume analyzes some of the issues that address the Church, both from inside the institutional church and issues in the context that hinder the mission of the Church. In this book, one finds thoughtful and pragmatic methods for addressing some of the problems of the church and the larger community! Moving Jesus Beyond the Pulpit is an important work that will be beneficial both to the church and the academy. I highly recommend this work! Dr. Cleotha Robertson, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Old Testament at Alliance Theological Seminary, New York City and the Senior Pastor Sound View Presbyterian Church, Bronx, New York.

The Podium The Pulpit And The Republicans written by Frederick Stecker and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-22 with Political Science categories.

In this book, the presidential debates of 2000, 2004, and 2008 are analyzed in terms of linguistics, rhetoric, and religious context to offer a unique perspective on the styles, beliefs, and strategies of the two major parties and their candidates. In The Podium, the Pulpit, and the Republicans: How Presidential Candidates Use Religious Language in American Political Debate, a veteran minister analyzes the religious metaphors Republicans use at the podium and alleges that the party deliberately employs blaming tactics, fear metaphors, and coded references to apocalyptic judgment to sway undecided voters. Over the past 40 years, Frederick Stecker charges, the Republican Party has created fear for political expediency. Stecker's book traces the development of the Republican rhetoric of polarization and applies the linguistics-based "nation-as-a-family" political typology of George Lakoff to an analysis of the presidential debates of 2000, 2004, and 2008. He demonstrates how Republican candidates select their language and metaphors to signal adherence to rigid belief systems and simple, black-and-white choices in domestic and foreign policy.

The story we are about to embark upon is not just a historical event that was stored in the mental archives of the writers imagination. Rather, it is the solid collection of indisputable facts. These facts are the pillows of truth that have guided a chosen vessel of God toward his vocational occupation. This book is a synopsis of the writers life, from the cradle to the pulpit. This story is based on a biological sketch of the writers childhood, to include his family background, community description, early education, and religious upbringing. His conversion to Christianity and call to the pastoral ministry was the turning point of his adult life. He was now moving on a particular uncertain course, not willing to quietly surrender to the will of God and heed the call to the pulpit ministry. This was the time of his life when he sought to avoid pastoral obligations by attempting to ponder in the field of journalism. This was, of course, the treading upon dangerous grounds that would subsequently provoke the one who requires his service to take serious action to implore his indulgence.

To keep the Christian message relevant in our rapidly changing times, it's vital that churches come to terms with how modern technology and scientific knowledge have changed the way we understand the world. And because preaching is the church's primary mode of communication (especially with adults), it offers a significant opportunity to shape how we think about the larger questions of our existence. One innovative way for preachers to address these concerns is through popular science fiction. Because many of the genre's stories deal with the impact of science and technology on individuals and cultures, they often have implicit religious implications. Pulpit Science Fiction is a fascinating collection of creative story sermons that shows how you can use elements drawn from science fiction to boldly proclaim the Christian faith. In addition to 14 imaginative "science fiction parables," a pair of essays are also included that illustrate how references to science fiction films and stories can be utilized in preaching. George Murphy has extended Christian parable telling into the 21st century with a series of preachable stories. These engaging, sometimes poignant, and often provocative tales spotlight particular theological themes from scripture. Comments following each pulpit-tested story help to contextualize it in relation to literary sources and the liturgical year. This book is a remarkable gift to those charged with proclaiming the Word to that spacefaring species, Homo sapiens. Jim Miller, Senior Program Associate Program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion American Association for the Advancement of Science George L. Murphy is a graduate of Ohio University, Johns Hopkins University (where he earned a Ph.D. in physics), and Wartburg Theological Seminary. An adjunct faculty member at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Murphy is also a Lutheran pastor who now serves on the staff of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Akron, Ohio. He has been widely published in both scientific and religious periodicals, and has received two awards from the Templeton Foundation for his papers on science and religion. Murphy is the author of Toward A Christian View Of A Scientific World and Cosmic Witness (CSS), The Trademark of God (Morehouse-Barlow), and The Cosmos in the Light of the Cross (Trinity Press International). He is also a member of the writing team for the online preaching resource The Immediate Word (www.csspub.com).
