The focus of this work is the importance of mental and physical purity in religious matters. For the Hittites, religious matters come close to daily life, and in this case the 'daily life' of the King of the Hittites is the subject of study. In the unique group of texts brought together here for the first time, the Great King himself (the person nearest to the gods) was felt contaminated. Professor Van Den Hout investigates the fascinating rituals and background connected with this situation.

The Character Of Kingship written by Declan Quigley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-31 with Social Science categories.

Why has monarchy been such a prevalent institution throughout history and in such a diverse range of societies? Kingship is at the heart of both ritual and politics and has major implications for the theory of social and cultural anthropology. Yet, despite the contemporary fascination with royalty, anthropologists have sorely neglected the subject in recent decades. This book combines a strong theoretical argument with a wealth of ethnography from kingships in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. Quigley gives a timely and much-needed overview of the anthropology of kingship and a crucial reassessment of the contributions of Frazer and Hocart to debates about the nature and function of royal ritual. From diverse fieldwork sites, a number of eminent anthropologists demonstrate how ritual and power intertwine to produce a series of variations around myth, tragedy and historical realities. However, underneath this diversity, two common themes invariably emerge: the attempt to portray kingship as timeless and perfect, and the dual nature of the king as sacred being and scapegoat.

You can't have a healthy church without healthy worship. If you are a worshipper of Jesus Christ, a worker in the Christian music industry, a part of a worship team, or a pastor, this book is for you. It is an alarming fact that we are in a time when the American Church is being more entertained than ever. Why is this alarming? Because, while the Church is being so entertained on Sunday mornings, the art of entertaining the Presence of the Lord has nearly been lost. Defending the Purity of Worship is a tool that will help any worship team get back to the core of worship so that they may bring the best and purest adoration to the Lord. What's within this book is so critical and timely for the American Church. Until we are all made aware of the things that may be holding us back from worshipping in Spirit and in Truth, we will never get there. Within this book are powerful teachings, filled with amazing truths on worship from the Word of God, that will help you get there. There is also practical insight from Phil that will equip you to be highly effective and efficient whether you are a member or leader of a worship team.

Sacred Kingship In World History written by A. Azfar Moin and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-10 with History categories.

Sacred kingship has been the core political form, in small-scale societies and in vast empires, for much of world history. This collaborative and interdisciplinary book recasts the relationship between religion and politics by exploring this institution in long-term and global comparative perspective. Editors A. Azfar Moin and Alan Strathern present a theoretical framework for understanding sacred kingship, which leading scholars reflect on and respond to in a series of essays. They distinguish between two separate but complementary religious tendencies, immanentism and transcendentalism, which mold kings into divinized or righteous rulers, respectively. Whereas immanence demands priestly and cosmic rites from kings to sustain the flourishing of life, transcendence turns the focus to salvation and subordinates rulers to higher ethical objectives. Secular modernity does not end the struggle between immanence and transcendence—flourishing and righteousness—but only displaces it from kings onto nations and individuals. After an essay by Marshall Sahlins that ranges from the Pacific to the Arctic, the book contains chapters on religion and kingship in settings as far-flung as ancient Egypt, classical Greece, medieval Islam, Mughal India, modern European drama, and ISIS. Sacred Kingship in World History sheds new light on how religion has constructed rulership, with implications spanning global history, religious studies, political theory, and anthropology.

Ancient stories invoking contemporary questions and providing insight for an uncertain future The Road to Kingship is the second volume in the A People and a Land trilogy and presents a chapter-by-chapter interpretation of 1–2 Samuel, based on the author’s translation. Johanna van Wijk-Bos reacquaints readers with familiar stories like David and Goliath while also introducing them to lesser-known biblical personalities like Doeg the Edomite and the wily servant Ziba. She offers guidance along the path taken by the Israelites during the rise of the united monarchy. The books of Samuel unfold before us with multiple voices. One voice endorses a spontaneous charismatic form of leadership, alongside another that argues for hereditary kingship. In listening to the different voices, we will prefer some rather than others; we may turn our backs on texts that sing a melody we are no longer able to join. As readers, we enter into the text with our questions and in our very questioning tentatively find a way forward and draw closer to the presence of the Most Holy.

This book rethinks the problem of Israelite kingship by examining how the male royal body and its self-presentation figured in the governance of the dual monarchies of Israel and Judah. As such, this is a reopening of old questions and an opening to new ones.

Honor Patronage Kinship Purity written by David A. deSilva and has been published by InterVarsity Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-10-04 with Religion categories.

For contemporary Western readers, it can be easy to miss or misread cultural nuances in the New Testament. To hear the text correctly we must be attuned to its original context. As David deSilva demonstrates, keys to interpretation are found in paying attention to four essential cultural themes: honor and shame, patronage and reciprocity, kinship and family, and purity and pollution. Through our understanding of honor and shame in the Mediterranean world, we gain new appreciation for how early Christians sustained commitment to a distinctive Christian identity and practice. By examining the protocols of patronage and reciprocity, we grasp more firmly the connections between God’s grace and our response. In exploring kinship and household relations, we grasp more fully the ethos of the early Christian communities as a new family brought together by God. And by investigating the notions of purity and pollution along with their associated practices, we realize how the ancient map of society and the world was revised by the power of the gospel. This new edition is thoroughly revised and expanded with up-to-date scholarship. A milestone work in the study of New Testament cultural backgrounds, Honor, Patronage, Kinship, and Purity offers a deeper appreciation of the New Testament, the gospel, and Christian discipleship.
