From soaring ballet leaps to the simple swaying at a high school prom, dance is the wedding of movement to music. It is a means of recreation, of communication--for the purpose of expressing an idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the movement itself. This engaging narrative, with biographical profiles, discusses Western dance as an art form, a folk tradition, and an entertainment spectacle. It examines the wide ranging dance types, including some of ancient rituals, Christian dance ecstasies, court and folk dances, ballet, social dances, the waltz, ballroom, tap, modern dance, and break and hip-hop dancing.

From the PREFACE. This book of folk dances is published for the sole purpose of placing in the hands of the teachers of the public schools and playgrounds in New York City a description and the appropriate music for the folk dances of the course of study and those which have been approved from time to time as good physical training procedure. No attempt is made to justify their use or the grading which is used, or suggested, nor is any scientific or theoretical end to be served by this collection. It is intended to be useful. All these dances have been used with success in this city and may be employed under like circumstances with the prospect of like success. This collection is the result of the earnest and efficient work of the teachers of physical training and the class teachers in the New York City schools, whose devoted efforts have developed folk dancing in its legitimate sphere to the great benefit and joy of many thousands of children. It is in recognition of their fundamental part in the development of this phase of physical training, and on their behalf, that this book is issued. From the INTRODUCTION. Folk dances have come to fill an important place in physical training. They range in character from the simple song play in which the accompanying action may be descriptive of some trade to the highly developed collection of movements which are not descriptive of anything in particular, save the pure joy of life in rhymthmic exercise. In varying degrees are found the elements of song, play, drama, and vigorous muscular work. For our purpose, it is necessary to make a careful choice of material, as many dances are very evidently inappropriate for scholastic and administrative reasons. Folk dances should serve only their legitimate purpose, viz: recreation and other results supposed to be derived from informal gymnastics. Of course, no one expects that the educational, corrective, and disciplinary results which we can best obtain from formal gymnastics, will ever be supplied by the folk dances, nor do we wish them to subserve the functions of athletics, athletic games, or even aesthetic dancing. They supply a charming addition to our physical training procedure and we can expect large results from their intelligent use.

Dance, throughout history, has been an integral part of various cultures, peoples, nations and celebrations. Praise Dance, as a ministry vehicle, is not just dance (by societal definitions) to a specific genre of music. It is not for a set group of persons who studied under a certain dancer or dance style. Nor is it for those who have the most technical abilities or the ability to remember and execute a series of movements on beat and in rhythm. Praise dance, as a ministry grace, is simply an expression of movement used to communicate with God and to communicate God's heart to His people. It is the sight of God's message. It communicates the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that may not be received or understood through the hearing of the Gospel. Praise Dance is used to praise, pray, preach, teach, evangelize, prophesy, minister, heal and set the atmosphere to bring forth signs, wonders and miracles. Praise Dance, as a ministry grace, is ministry of God's Word through movement.

Why We Dance written by Kimerer L. LaMothe and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-07 with Philosophy categories.

Within intellectual paradigms that privilege mind over matter, dance has long appeared as a marginal, derivative, or primitive art. Drawing support from theorists and artists who embrace matter as dynamic and agential, this book offers a visionary definition of dance that illuminates its constitutive work in the ongoing evolution of human persons. Why We Dance introduces a philosophy of bodily becoming that posits bodily movement as the source and telos of human life. Within this philosophy, dance appears as an activity that humans evolved to do as the enabling condition of their best bodily becoming. Weaving theoretical reflection with accounts of lived experience, this book positions dance as a catalyst in the development of human consciousness, compassion, ritual proclivity, and ecological adaptability. Aligning with trends in new materialism, affect theory, and feminist philosophy, as well as advances in dance and religious studies, this work reveals the vital role dance can play in reversing the trajectory of ecological self-destruction along which human civilization is racing.

Excerpt from Dancing Made Easy It is not the purpose of this book to project any novel system of teaching dancing or to advocate any unique dances. Rather it is a painstaking effort to reduce to the simplest possible terms an authoritative method and to treat merely with those dances which have become established and standardized. Many dance publications were examined, and while interesting in themselves appeared to present a discouraging if not formidable aspect when they moved to the avowed intention to instruct.
