Is peace an aberration? The New York Times bestselling author of Paris 1919 offers a provocative view of war as an essential component of humanity. NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW “Margaret MacMillan has produced another seminal work. . . . She is right that we must, more than ever, think about war. And she has shown us how in this brilliant, elegantly written book.”—H.R. McMaster, author of Dereliction of Duty and Battlegrounds: The Fight to Defend the Free World The instinct to fight may be innate in human nature, but war—organized violence—comes with organized society. War has shaped humanity’s history, its social and political institutions, its values and ideas. Our very language, our public spaces, our private memories, and some of our greatest cultural treasures reflect the glory and the misery of war. War is an uncomfortable and challenging subject not least because it brings out both the vilest and the noblest aspects of humanity. Margaret MacMillan looks at the ways in which war has influenced human society and how, in turn, changes in political organization, technology, or ideologies have affected how and why we fight. War: How Conflict Shaped Us explores such much-debated and controversial questions as: When did war first start? Does human nature doom us to fight one another? Why has war been described as the most organized of all human activities? Why are warriors almost always men? Is war ever within our control? Drawing on lessons from wars throughout the past, from classical history to the present day, MacMillan reveals the many faces of war—the way it has determined our past, our future, our views of the world, and our very conception of ourselves.

Karl von Clausewitz's study On War was described by the American strategic thinker Bernard Brodie as 'not simply the greatest, but the only great book about war'. It is hard to disagree. Even though he wrote his only major work at a time when the range of firearms was fifty yards, much of what he had to say remains relevant today. Michael Howard explains Clausewitz's ideas in terms both of his experiences as a professional soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and of the intellectual background of his time. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

2022 Reprint of the 1925 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The foundation of Liddell Hart's theory of limited war emerged in the 1920s from his conviction that Europe's military leaders had lost sight of the true objective of war and consequently had mishandled the conduct of the First World War. Believing that the sole objective of war was the destruction of the main enemy army in great battles, they had pommeled each other mercilessly for four years in a massive struggle of attrition. The extraordinary cost of this effort was obvious to all, but Liddell Hart argued that it was also unnecessary and based upon an unsound principle. Using Hannibal's victory at Cannae and Moltke's at Sedan as examples, he asserted that "there are . . . plenty of negative examples to prove that the conquests of the main forces of the enemy are not synonymous with victory." Moreover, as the world war had revealed, attempts to achieve such an objective could too easily lead to wars of unlimited means, wars "in which the conductor does not know when to stop." "It implies," he continued, "that the end is pursued regardless of what lies beyond. The conductor allows the fighting instinct to usurp control of his reason." To restore this control, Liddell Hart asserted it was first necessary "to produce true grand strategists to replace the color-blind exponents of mass destruction who can only see red" by redefining the objective of war. This was the central theme of his first book on military affairs, Paris; or the Future of War, in which he wrote that the purpose of war was "To ensure a resumption of the peacetime policy with the shortest and least costly interruption of the normal life of the country". Contents: The future of war -- The origins of the false objective -- Permanent national objects -- The national objective in war -- Historical examples of the moral objective -- The means to the moral objective -- The air weapon -- Objections to the air-attack -- Are armies and navies obsolete? -- The naval weapon -- The army weapon -- The evolution of "new model" armies -- Epilogue.

"If the mind is to emerge unscathed from this relentless struggle with the unforeseen, two qualities are indispensable: first, an intellect that, even in the darkest hour, retains some glimmerings of the inner light which leads to truth; and second, the courage to follow this faint light wherever it may lead." ― Carl von Clausewitz, On War On War is written between the years 1816 and 1830 by a Prussian general and military theorist named Carl von Clausewitz, who stressed the "moral" and political aspects of war. The book is mainly about Carl von Clausewitz's definition of war and theories on military strategy and is deemed to be his most notable work. Clausewitz analyzed the conflicts of his time along the line of the categories' Purpose, Goal, and Means. He reasoned that the Purpose of war is imposing one's will and is for the most part determined by politics. The Goal is set and attained with various Means. These Means may be by defeat or eliminating opposing troops or by non-military methods; propaganda, economic sanctions, and political isolation, to name some. According to a researcher and author on military history, military strategy, and war and peace in general named Azar Gat some of the key ideas discussed in On War include are as follows: How wars are a mere continuation of politics by other means, basically saying that war is a political instrument. The two broad types of military objectives in a war that supports one's political objectives: a) limited war and b) war to "render the enemy helpless" How all else being equal, the course of the war will tend to favor the party with the stronger emotional and political motivations, especially the defender.
