Technology's contribution to economic growth and competitiveness has been the subject of vigorous debate in recent years. This book demonstrates the importance of a historical perspective in understanding the role of technological innovation in the economy. The authors examine key episodes and institutions in the development of the U.S. research system and in the development of the research systems of other industrial economies. They argue that the large potential contributions of economics to the understanding of technology and economic growth have been constrained by the narrow theoretical framework employed within neoclassical economies. A richer framework, they believe, will support a more fruitful dialogue among economists, policymakers, and managers on the organization of public and private institutions for innovation. David Mowery is Associate Professor of Business and Public Policy at the School of Business Administration, University of California, Berkeley. Nathan S. Rosenberg is Fairleigh Dickinson Professor of Economics at Stanford University. He is the author of Inside the Black Box: Technology and Economics (CUP, 1983).

What do we mean by development? How can citizens, governments and the international community foster development? The process by which nations escape poverty and achieve economic and social progress has been the subject of extensive examination for hundreds of years. The notion of development itself has evolved from an original preoccupation with incomes and economic growth to a much broader understanding of development. In his new book, Ian Goldin considers the contributions that education, health, gender, equity and other dimensions of human well-being make to development, and discusses why it is also necessary to take into account the role of institutions and the rule of law as well as sustainability and environmental concerns.

This book addresses the challenge of securing high-paying jobs for American workers. It examines the impacts of a wide range of state and local characteristics—such as low taxes, high-skilled workforce, reliance on manufacturing, and even nice weather—on the economic development of U.S. regions. The author provides a detailed account for each factor’s impact on the growth of good jobs. The research focuses on U.S. metropolitan areas and states, tracking employment and income change in these regions from 1990 to the near present. While providing numerous best principles for state and regional policy, the author uncovers the keys to supporting high-paying U.S. jobs in an important book that will prove invaluable to elected officials, economic development practitioners, and students interested in the pursuit of economic development.

The challenges associated with the struggles for attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and objectives are as diverse and complex as the variety of human societies, national conditions and natural ecosystems worldwide. Despite decades of economic growth and technological advances, our world is plagued by poverty, hunger, disease, conflicts and inequality, and many societies are under the strain of environmental changes and governance failure. Such global-scale challenges call for the SDGs to be translated beyond bold concepts and aspirational targets into concrete programs and feasible plans that are substantively valuable, locally acceptable, pragmatic and operationally implementable. In the pursuit of the SDGs, positive results are far from guaranteed. Success is uncertain. Instead, the path forward requires difficult learning, experimentation and adaptation by multiple stakeholders. Loss and sacrifice are foreseeable and often inevitable. This important book captures the lessons from ongoing struggles and the early successes. Productive failures and emerging practices are identified, analyzed and promulgated for interdisciplinary learning by, and for the inspiration of, like-minded individuals, organizations, communities and nations worldwide. They can also inform and enrich the curricula in universities, training institutions and schools to prepare future generations of citizens, leaders and activists with the ethos and values of sustainability and social responsibility. The book offers a platform for academics, practitioners and concerned global citizens to identify pathways forward on the immense challenges of sustainability.

Economic development results in transformation of the socio-economic status of the population and the country as a whole. It is crucial for alleviation of poverty, creation of employment and increasing the wealth of any economy. With increasing integration and globalization of the world economy, economic development of developing countries has assumed greater significance. Various models and theories of economic development have been formulated by economists such as the Scandinavian model, Washington Consensus model, Asian Miracle model, State led development model and Lisbon Strategy. These models of development have evolved over a period of time. In recent times, several economists have emphasized on the need to have indigenous models of development, as various regions of the world differ greatly in terms of education, employment, technology and gender development. While the Scandinavian countries are in an advanced stage of development, Asian economies have started emerging as drivers of economic growth over the last few decades. The status of African countries however, remains poor and desires interventions from the ruling powers and the global society. Even the countries of other regions, which have witnessed rapid growth in recent years, have large-scale disparities between the rich and the poor. Further, environmental concerns, rise of epidemics such as AIDS and emergence of new threats to human security have compounded the problems of the developing world. The United Nations has developed Millennium Development Goals to address the growing challenges of the developing world. It is therefore, imperative to look at various approaches of economic development. This book provides insights into the various perspectives and experiences of different countries or regions in their pursuit of economic development.
