Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus was first published in 1818. A year before Hoffmann's novella Der Sandmann was published in the first of the two volumes of his Nachtstucke. A major theme for Mary Shelley and E.T.A. Hoffmann and a hitherto neglected aspect of academic research is the question of madness, in Frankenstein and Der Sandmann. Both texts represent certain features shared by the Romantic movements in Germany and England, such as an ironic stance towards Romanticism itself, its Prometheanism, or its indulgence in the occult. At the same time both authors criticise the Enlightenment project more than they do celebrate the idea of progress. The first two chapters of this study stress the contrastive approaches of Hoffmann and Mary Shelley in their explorations of madness. The rest of this analysis emphasises the similarities of mythological, cultural and linguistic contexts within which Mary Shelley and Hoffmann settle their pre-occupation with madness. This study aims at finding out whether insanity is an illness of the isolated individual, or whether society is sick itself. Is insanity related to the body or the mind? Is it an image for the crisis of representation in postrevolutionary Romanticism?

Gothic and Horror have been perceived as intertwined ever since their coming into existence. Although initially emerging as clearly delineated literary genres, in the late 20th century we can speak of their transition into more open cultural categories. Gothic and Horror influences, previously limited to books and films, predominate in contemporary art, fashion, theatrical and performance art, video and multimedia installations, music, video and computer games. Gothic and Horror have invaded the language of politics and resulted in the formation of a number of subcultures styling their lives accordingly. The awareness of the above makes us realise that the insistence on the treatment of Gothic and Horror as separate genres is at least limiting, if not unacceptable. An alternative offered by this book, resulting from a thorough examination of the presence of Gothic and Horror conventions in contemporary culture, calls for an introduction of two new classificatory units, referred to in the book as Gothic and Horror syndromes, which can be brought down to the representations of disease and meat respectively.

The fantastic has been particularly prolific in Hispanic countries during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, largely due to the legacy of short-story writers as well as the Latin-American boom that presented alternatives to the model of literary realism. While these writers’ works have done much to establish the Hispanic fantastic in the international literary canon, women authors from Spain and Latin America are not always acknowledged, and their work is less well known to readers. The aim of this critical anthology is to render Hispanic female writers of the fantastic visible, to publish a representative selection of their work, and to make it accessible to English-speaking readers. Five short stories are presented by five key authors.
