Excerpt from The Question of Miracles The Christian religion has ever professed itself to be a religion of miracles. Its early documents assure us that a series of miracles ushered in the life of its Founder, and that His public ministry was marked by the continuous exercise of super natural power. We are told that He pointed to these works in confirmation of His teaching: and, further, that He made special appeal to a crowning miracle - His own Resurrection - which should be for all time an irresistible attestation of the truth of His claims. To that event the Church has ever pointed as the foundation of her belief. Moreover, if the New Testament writings are to be believed, He endowed His apostles with similar powers: and these they exercised in a manner which leaves no doubt as to their reality. The miraculous element in Christianity is in accordance with its internal character as a religion. For the Christian revelation is no mere ethical system. It claims to be nothing short of a vast inrush of supernatural forces upon the human race, elevating man to a new plane of being, and conferring upon him an altogether new destiny. According to Christian belief, by the Incarnation and the Atonement, man is raised to sonship to God: his soul be comes the seat of a divine indwelling: and through membership in Christ's body he receives the pledge of an eternal beatitude to which his nature gives him no claim. Excerpt from The Natural History of Religious Feeling: A Question of Miracles in the Soul The deductions made from this assumption are of the gravest import. It is alleged, or im plied, that those who have had the experience of conversion are the chosen of God, that they are so changed in nature as to have become new crea tures, are the children of God, and are destined to an eternity of blessedness; while those who have not had the experience are the rejected of God, are children of Satan, and are destined to an eternity of woe. Consequences so momentous would naturally give pause to a person of proper sensibility, before adopting the premises from which they are drawn. Excerpt from Miracles and Science F. If you are in earnest, you must know and feel too, as I do, that the important point is whether' must and ought can go together here. If you, still claiming to be a Christian, hold that your faith may, as well as must, be tested by the methods in question, you hold that it will stand the test: if, on the other hand, you only mean that the process is inevitable, you mean that we have-no eventual prospect before us but Atheism. Excerpt from Miracles: A Rhapsody If the above be a true description of miracles, - and perhaps it is - it follows, and must be con fessed, that they abound: that they are strewn around us, thick as autumnal leaves in forest glades: that in miracles we may be said to live, and move, and have our being; and that the question is not where they are, but where they are not to be found. Excerpt from Miracles in the New Testament The main part of this book consists of a critical examina tion of the miracle-stories of the New Testament, leading to the hypothesis that the original events underlying those traditions need not be regarded as miraculous. This is prefaced by an attempt to define the belief in miracles, and followed by an estimate of some of the theological results of its rejection. It must not be thought that, because the constructive part of the book (pp. 211-218) is so short, it is un important. It was inevitable, from the nature of the case, that the detailed criticism of the miracle-stories should form the bulk of the argument. But criticism is throughout regarded as subordinate to construction. There would be little point in discussing the problem of miracles except as a step towards a formulation of Christian theology. The last few pages of the conclusion are meant to focus the whole argument upon what really matters - our belief about God and Christ. They should, perhaps, be read first, as well as last, if the book is to be fairly judged as a whole. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Miracles: Helps to Faith, Not Hindrances Think that there is danger to the interests of truth and godliness in such a low estimate of the value of the supernatural. For if we View the mission of Christ as a whole, what is it but one stupendous miracle? What is the incarnation if it be not a miracle? What is the great redemptive scheme but an interference or intervention of Divine agency to produce an effect otherwise impossible? And is not that the very essence of miracle? If, therefore, we let go or fail to appreciate those miracles, which, lying in the sphere of human observation, were given as the external signs of the reality of that great spiritual miracle which cannot be so directly tested, who does not see that by and by we shall be in danger of letting go this last also? If we reject miracle in the material department, are we not on the high way that leads to the rejection of it in the spiritual, and so to the reduction of the gospel to a mere system of naturalism, one among the rest of the religions of the world, - better than most indeed, but still only Of men? Excerpt from Miracles and the Miraculous Tn argument in brief is that, while the existence of a Personal Ruler of the Universe must be assumed in order to render miracles conceivable, the nobler the conception that is formed of such a Being the more incredible do miracles become, and therefore the more probably false the documents which record them. Excerpt from The Miracles of Jesus IN every religion the supernatural affects man. The religious man seeks to grasp the supernatural. But the supernatural repels just as soon as it obtrudes itself in per ceptible events and in a measure unveils the secret. The religious man sees himself in the struggle of these two tendencies of his being; he reaches after the supernatural and would snatch it, so imperfect does he feel himself and his world to be without it; but when he sees it he is tossed to and fro by doubts whether it is, indeed, the super natural or merely a delusion.
