The book consists of seventeen chapters which cover a selection of early, medieval, modern and contemporary Problems of Muslim Theology, Philosophy and Mysticism. This book argues that the terms are never neutral; ideas thrive upon terms and travel in history. If they are false they go on coloring the understanding and interpretation of other ideas. At times it takes centuries for someone to identify them and straighten them and that most of the problems of Muslim Philosophy, Theology and Mysticism which kept the Muslims occupied in early and medieval centuries, and then in the modern period too, could not arise had the Muslims' not accepted un-Qur'anic philosophical notions from Greeks (through Christians and others) and then formulated their problems in these notions. The book argues that the Contemporary Problems relating to the above disciplines are no exception. We are repeating the same mistake over and again. Seventeen articles discuss 17 main and many secondary problems relating Muslim theology, Philosophy, Sufism and Reconstruction of Islamic Religious Thought to prove the above contention. Each article reconstructs the problem in Qur'anic notions in accordance with the Qur'anic teachings. One article examines as a Comparative Study, the Christian theologian and philosophers' views on the problem of Divine Omniscience. The Qur'an is the fundamental religious document and basic source of Islamic faith. Sufism is a phenomenon which organized itself into a discipline in the early centuries of Islam. A great majority of Muslims have always believed it quite coherent with the spirit of their faith. But the question is: "Where does lie its origin in the Qur'an!" First time in the 14 centuries of the history of Muslim culture, an article included in this book traces the origin of Islamic spirituality in the Qur'anic term 'Shahid' (the certified witness/the verifier) and explains its development into a discipline on Qur'anic grounds. Al-Haqq means the standard of truth. For centuries the Muslims have believed al-haqq to be the comely Name of God. The first article in this book differs with this concept and argues that al-haqq is the title used in the Qur'an for the Word of God, and not for God. God is the Descender of the truth. The belief, the idea, the ideology, the notion, the simile, the vision, imagination, the religious experience or whatever is in accordance with the truth is truth, what is against it is untruth. All the articles of this book examine on their respective themes how this principle is overlooked and how it has created problems for Muslim Thought. Writers like Martin Schreiner, Ignacz Goldziher, R. Nicholson Franz Rosenthal, Harry Austrian Wolfson all argue that the Islamic teachings are predestinarian in nature. Religious scholars like Dr. Muhammad Fethullah Gülen promote such views about Islam. Eight articles included in this book differ with this view and define the limits of human freedom in Qur'anic perspective. Examining antinomies relating Omniscience, Omnipotence, Predestinarian verses of the Qur'an, Inexorability of the Appointed Term, Pre-ordained Sustenance, Divine Pleasure and Divine Will etc., it has been argued in these articles that not a single person ever born including Iblis (Satan), Pharaoh, Abu Lahb (who is condemned by name as sinner in the Qur'an) was ever born such that it was predetermined in Allah's Knowledge that he/she will leave the world as sinner. The most significant thing about this book is that everything argued in this book is argued on the authority of the Qur'an; that nothing said in this book is without the authority of the Qur'an.

Winner of the Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion: Textual Studies from the American Academy of Religion Fakhr al-Din al-Razi (1148 - 1210) wrote prolifically in the disciplines of theology, Quranic exegesis, and philosophy. He composed treatises on jurisprudence, medicine, physiognomy, astronomy, and astrology. His body of work marks a momentous turning point in the Islamic tradition and his influence within the post-classical Islamic tradition is striking. After his death in 1210 his works became standard textbooks in Islamic institutions of higher learning. Razi investigates his transformative contributions to the Islamic intellectual tradition. One of the leading representatives of Sunni orthodoxy in medieval Islam, Razi was the first intellectual to exploit the rich heritage of ancient and Islamic philosophy to interpret the Quran. Jaffer uncovers Razi's boldly unconventional intellectual aspirations. The book elucidates the development of Razi's unique appropriation of methods and ideas from ancient and Islamic philosophy into a unified Quranic commentary--and consequently into the Sunni worldview. Jaffer shows that the genre of Quranic commentary in the post-classical period contains a wealth of philosophical material that is of major interest for the history of philosophical ideas in Islam and for the interaction of the aqli ("rational") and naqli ("traditional") sciences in Islamic civilization. Jaffer demonstrates the ways Razi reconciled the opposing intellectual trends of his milieu on major methodological conflicts. A highly original work, this book brilliantly repositions the central aims of Razi's intellectual program.

Al Ghazali Averroes And The Interpretation Of The Qur An written by Avital Wohlman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-04 with Philosophy categories.

This book examines the contrasting interpretations of Islam and the Qur’an by Averroes and Al-Ghazali, as a way of helping us untangle current impasses affecting each Abrahamic faith. This has traditionally been portrayed as a battle between philosophy and theology, but the book shows that Averroes was rather more religious and Al-Ghazali more philosophical than they are usually portrayed. The book traces the interaction between two Muslim thinkers, showing how each is convinced of the existence of a Book in which God is revealed to rational beings, to whom He has given commandments, as well as of the excellence of Islamic society. Yet they differ regarding the proper way to interpret the sacred Book. From this point of view, their discussion does not address the contrast between philosophy and religion, or that between reason and revelation that is so characteristic of the Middle Ages, but rather explores differences at the heart of philosophical discussion in our day: is there a level of discourse which will facilitate mutual comprehension among persons, allowing them to engage in debate? This interpretation of sacred texts illustrates the ways religious practice can shape believers’ readings of their sacred texts, and how philosophical interpretations can be modified by religious practice. Moreover, since this sort of inquiry characterizes each Abrahamic tradition, this study can be expected to enhance interfaith conversation and explore religious ways to enhance tolerance between other believers.

Assuming no prior knowledge, The Qur'an: A Philosophical Guide is an introduction to the Qur'an from a philosophical point of view. Oliver Leaman's guide begins by familiarizing the readers with the core theories and controversies surrounding the text. Covering key theoretical approaches and focusing on its style and language, Leaman introduces the Qur'an as an aesthetic object and as an organization. The book discusses the influence of the Qur'an on culture and covers its numerous interpreters from the modernizers and popularizers to the radicals. He presents a close reading of the Qur'an, carefully and clearly presenting a variety of philosophical interpretation verse-by-verse. Explaining what the philosopher is arguing, relating the argument to a particular verse, and providing the reader with the means to be part of the discussion, this section includes: - Translated extracts from the text - A range of national backgrounds and different cultural and historic contexts spanning the classical and modern period, the Middle East, Europe and North America - Philosophical interpretations ranging from the most Islamophobe to the extreme apologist - A variety of schools of thought and philosophers such as Peripatetic, Illuminationist, and Sufi. Written with clarity and authority and showing the distinct ways a variety of thinkers have sought to understand the text, The Qur'an: A Philosophical Guide introduces readers to the value of interpreting the Qur'an philosophically.

Philosophical Perspectives On Modern Qur Nic Exegesis written by Massimo Campanini and has been published by Equinox Publishing (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Qurʼan categories.

This book explores the possibility of a hermeneutics of the Qur'an. It starts from the presupposition that the Qur'an can be studied as a philosophical book. Thus the analysis is theoretical more than historical. Many philosophers commented the Qur'an and many supported their theories by resorting to the Qur'an. Thinkers like Fakhr al-Din al-Razi connected traditional theology and philosophy in their Qur'anic commentary. Others like Nasr Abu Zayd used philosophy to deconstruct the Qur'an paving the way for a modern humanistic hermeneutics. This book tries to go a step further: it aims to offer a path within the Qur'an that - through philosophy - leads to a fresh understanding of fundamental tenets of Islamic thought, most importantly tawhid - God's oneness - and to a fresh reading of the Qur'anic text. This book applies the phenomenological and ontological hermeneutics of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger to the study of the Qur'an going far beyond Annemarie Schimmel's phenomenological approach that is neither philosophical nor properly phenomenological (in Husserl's sense).

Human Self written by Athar Saeed Naqvi, PhD and has been published by Balboa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-20 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Unlike most theories of the human self that are generally based on conjecture, this book describes a new scientific theory of the human self and its states of consciousness. This theory is formulated using the revealed knowledge found in the Holy Scriptures along with the principles of physics. In a quest for the ultimate truth, the book attempts to understand the relationship between man and his Creator. Dr. Naqvi describes the universal principle of complementarity of creation that shows that the world of matter is not mutually exclusive to the spirit world, but both are complementary to each other. The three major holy scriptures of monotheistic faith describe the human spirit as a breath from the spirit of God. It is termed divine spark in man. The book explains that the divine spark is a seed of divine attributes of truth, goodness, compassion, and justice. A major outcome of this notion is that all humans are equal members of the family of God, irrespective of race, color, or creed and deserving mutual respect and compassion. Questions are answered about the origin of human spirit, purpose of human creation, spirit-matter interaction, and the basis of ethics. Findings of prominent neurosurgeons show that the spirit (soul) is an autonomous entity that can exist without a physical vehicle, which takes the inquisitive reader into a mind-blowing conclusion. This book is a response to the growing need among academics and thinking masses for scientific explanations of spirituality, psychology, philosophy, mysticism, religion, and paranormal phenomena. Over the past twenty-five years, the author has presented the theory in various universities in psychology and theology departments globally. This book may serve as course material for university-level psychology, philosophy, and theology departments. In brief, the unique theory presented in this book can be described as the science of spirituality.

The wisdom of one of the greatest scholars of Islam can be a companion on your own spiritual journey. Considered by many to be the all-time greatest scholar of Islam, Imam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111) was also one of the foremost sages of theology, philosophy and Sufism. His writings on the interrelation of law, theology and mysticism were central in establishing Sufism as a core dimension of orthodox Islamic practice. Muslim communities all across the world today still base much of their practice of Islam on Ghazali's writings. The Forty Foundations of Religion, Ghazali's own summary of his magnum opus, The Revival of the Religious Sciences, serves as a brief and powerful summary of Islamic faith, worship, law and spirituality. It outlines the basis of Islamic belief, the foundational matters of ritual and practice, and the character traits a person must cultivate and avoid in the perfection of faith. Now you can experience the wisdom of Ghazali even if you have no previous knowledge of The Forty Foundations of Religion or Islam. This SkyLight Illuminations edition--the first publication of significant portions of The Forty Foundations of Religion in English--provides original translations of selected highlights accompanied by insightful commentary that makes the core message of this great spiritual master relevant to anyone seeking a balanced understanding of Islam.
