A hundred years ago, the most famous athlete in America was a horse. But Dan Patch was more than a sports star; he was a cultural icon in the days before the automobile. Born crippled and unable to stand, he was nearly euthanized. For a while, he pulled the grocer's wagon in his hometown of Oxford, Indiana. But when he was entered in a race at the county fair, he won -- and he kept on winning. Harness racing was the top sport in America at the time, and Dan, a pacer, set the world record for the mile. He eventually lowered the mark by four seconds, an unheard-of achievement that would not be surpassed for decades. America loved Dan Patch, who, though kind and gentle, seemed to understand that he was a superstar: he acknowledged applause from the grandstands with a nod or two of his majestic head and stopped as if to pose when he saw a camera. He became the first celebrity sports endorser; his name appeared on breakfast cereals, washing machines, cigars, razors, and sleds. At a time when the highest-paid baseball player, Ty Cobb, was making $12,000 a year, Dan Patch was earning over a million dollars. But even then horse racing attracted hustlers, cheats, and touts. Drivers and owners bet heavily on races, which were often fixed; horses were drugged with whiskey or cocaine, or switched off with "ringers." Although Dan never lost a race, some of his races were rigged so that large sums of money could change hands. Dan's original owner was intimidated into selling him, and America's favorite horse spent the second half of his career touring the country in a plush private railroad car and putting on speed shows for crowds that sometimes exceeded 100,000 people. But the automobile cooled America's romance with the horse, and by the time he died in 1916, Dan was all but forgotten. His last owner, a Minnesota entrepreneur gone bankrupt, buried him in an unmarked grave. His achievements have faded, but throughout the years, a faithful few kept alive the legend of Dan Patch, and in Crazy Good, Charles Leerhsen travels through their world to bring back to life this fascinating story of triumph and treachery in small-town America and big-city racetracks.

If you liked Dan Gurney - and name one motorsport fan who doesn't - this is the book you have been hoping someone would write following Dan's passing. It is not a biography, but it covers every aspect of his life in enough detail to provide a flowing context of his unique history as driver from 1957 to 1970 and then as a team owner until he died at 87 in 2018. Phil Henny is the perfect guy to write this book. He knew Dan well and worked with him on the Shelby American Le Mans team. He is an unabashed admirer and was in contact with Gurney at All American Racers after he left Shelby American. His enthusiasm on the subject is obvious and we'd much rather read a book written by someone like this than by someone who really didn't know the subject and approached the project as just another writing project. We highly recommend this book.My book is not a biography, it is a remembrance of the extraordinary life and accomplishments of an American Racing Icon with whom I had the opportunity to be associated in one of his greatest Victories: the 24 Hours of le Mans, in 1967. Thank you Dan, since that day you changed my life. This is for Dan Gurney's family, friends and all the fans who followed and appreciated him as a driver, a designer, a team owner and a man. I hope this book will provide a correct and vivid representation of what Dan's great accomplishments gave us in the last sixty years.Dan Gurney drove for Ferrari in the 1950s, who spearheaded Porsche's foray into Formula 1, he won Le Mans 24 Hours for Ford. A patriot who built and drove the first American F1 car ever to win a Grand Prix. A victor in F1, sports cars and USAC. Also in Can-Am, Trans-Am and NASCAR. A race car manufacturer too, who ran front-line teams in Indy car, Champ Car, Formula 5000, Trans-Am and IMSA. A racer acknowledged by his peers to be one of the very best: famously, the man whom Jim Clark regarded as his most serious rival.

'The Calling of Dan Matthews' is a crime novel authored by Harold Bell Wright. It told the story of a young preacher who resigned from the ministry in order to retain his integrity. The book is inspired by Wright's own life, who used to be a preacher before resigning. In many of his writings, he attacked the hypocrisy and impractical nature of popular churches. To Wright, hard work, integrity and concrete efforts to aid people in need were far more important than church doctrines or sermons.

An engrossing, adventure-filled account of the rush to discover and save Vietnam's most extraordinary animals Deep in the jungle where the borders of Vietnam meet those of Laos and Cambodia is a region known as "the lost world." Large mammals never seen before by Western science have popped up frequently in these mountains in the last decade, including a half-goat/half-ox, a deer that barks, and a close relative of the nearly extinct Javan rhino. In an age when scientists are excited by discovering a new kind of tube worm, the thought of finding and naming a new large terrestrial mammal is astonishing, and wildlife biologists from all over the world are flocking to this dangerous region. The result is a race between preservation and destruction. Containing research gathered from famous biologists, conservationists, indigenous peoples, former POWs, ex-Viet Cong, and the first U.S. ambassador to Vietnam since the war's end, Gold Rush in the Jungle goes deep into the valleys, hills, and hollows of Vietnam to explore the research, the international trade in endangered species, the lingering effects of Agent Orange, and the effort of a handful of biologists to save the world's rarest animals.
