The city of Glasgow, formerly one of the largest industrial centres in the world, was once responsible for building about one-quarter of the world's railway locomotives. This was complemented by a massive urban railway network: the second largest in the UK. However, the Beeching Report of 1963 inevitably took its toll on Glasgow. This book examines the changing face of Glasgow's railways ever since that infamous report, starting with the period of rationalisation and industrial decline that followed. It also explores the revival enjoyed in the last few decades, with lines reopened and modern rolling stock introduced. Furthermore, with Glasgow hosting the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it looks at the emphasis being placed on the railway as further development work takes place.

Glasgow has a long and rich railway history and was once one of the world's foremost centres of railway engineering. The city is home to the largest suburban rail network in the United Kingdom outside of London, and also to the third oldest underground system in the world; a reflection of being the Second City of the Empire at that time. Over the years there has been investment and expansion, but also closures and uncertainty. Chapters include the history of the four main termini, the suburban network, the Subway, the Glasgow Corporation Tramways, the present day, and future developments.

Glasgow is unique among British cities in that it has the largest rail network outside of London, and there was once a time when the city had four very grand stations - Central, Queen Street, St Enoch's and Buchanan Street. Two of these have gone and with them the heyday of the city's railways. Those times are captured for us in this collection of fifty-two photographs, accompanied by a history of each of the city's lines. The neighbouring region of Dunbartonshire is also covered and was itself unique in that Milngavie was the home of one of the world's first monorail systems. Stations featured in the book - many of them long gone - include Cowlairs, Possilpark, Eglinton Street, Buchanan Street, Dalmuir Riverside, Stobcross, Bellahouston, Summerston, Maryhill Central, St Enoch's, Partick West, Cumberland Street, the Singer Terminal (Clydebank), Rutherglen and Strathbungo.

By comparison with their English counterparts, Scottish nineteenth-century railways have suffered from a degree of neglect by economic historians. Most of the existing literature is written for the railway enthusiast, concentrating mainly on topography, mechanical developments and entertaining episodes. Few of these books cover the whole of Scotland and most are treatments of single companies or of particular dramatic events. This study covers the earliest period of Scottish railway history, from the years of the first waggonway developments in the eighteenth century to the advent of the railway mania of the 1840s. It concentrates on the planning and formation of the various railways, the problems and achievements associated with their construction, and the financial records of the companies up to 1844. The first two chapters cover the horse-drawn waggonways of the eighteenth century and the coal railways of the early nineteenth century, while Chapters 3–5 cover the railways of the 1830s and 1840s.
