The Rancher Who Took Her In - Teresa Southwick Perhaps applying to a Help Wanted ad in her wedding gown wasn't the best way to make a first impression on a job interview! But Kate Dixon needed to escape the humiliation of her hastily called-off wedding. Cabot Dixon's Montana ranch, if not the most welcoming place in the West, seemed like the perfect place to keep a low profile. Cabot was a rancher - not a couples' counselor! - and his past experiences with women (plus the dusty wedding dress) told him Kate was a runner. So when his young son Tyler attached himself to Kate and made not-so-subtle hints about wanting her as his mum, the single dad wondered what he'd opened himself up to...especially when he realised that he'd do anything to keep the runaway bride by his side for keeps! Not Just A Cowboy - Caro Carson Heiress Patricia Cargill is out to prove herself. Running Texas Rescue and Relief gives her the greatest satisfaction she could imagine. Until she meets volunteer Luke Waterson. He's a little younger, a little brasher and a lot more dangerous than anyone she's dated before. He could be everything she needs. An unexpected change of fortune, however, reveals Luke isn't the nomadic cowboy he seems. Falling for a millionaire rancher, especially one who keeps secrets, was not in Patricia's plans. But a man who sees her as more than just a big bank account could be worth breaking her rules for... The Husband School - Kristine Rolofson Meg Ripley may run the local diner, but she has never been one to get involved in the small town craziness of Willing, Montana. Now suddenly she's entangled in it? In addition to harboring a pregnant runaway, she's been enlisted to transform scruffy bachelor cowboys into husband material for a reality dating show. Including her ex-boyfriend, and the only man she's ever allowed herself to love, Owen McGregor. Owen is still devastatingly handsome and the passion between them hasn't faded with time. Unfortunately, neither have the issues that drove them apart. But that doesn't mean Meg is ready to turn him into the perfect man for someone else! Because despite their past, Meg suspects that Owen is still the one.

The whole village was baffled: was she Adam Turmaine's wife, girlfriend or the baby's nanny? Actually, Claris Newman was Adam's assistant. But her job description had temporarily changed. In between faxing and typing, Claris was now looking after Adam's baby godson, Nathan. If being a stand-in mom was a twenty-four-hour job, living with her boss was just as demanding—even if he was irresistibly attractive. Eventually baby Nathan would go home to his own mom and dad, but Claris and Adam had developed a taste for parenting. Now they were thinking about trying it for real!

In Delta Empire: Lee Wilson and the Transformation of Agriculture in the New South Jeannie Whayne employs the fascinating history of a powerful plantation owner in the Arkansas delta to recount the evolution of southern agriculture from the late nineteenth century through World War II. After his father’s death in 1870, Robert E. “Lee” Wilson inherited 400 acres of land in Mississippi County, Arkansas. Over his lifetime, he transformed that inheritance into a 50,000-acre lumber operation and cotton plantation. Early on, Wilson saw an opportunity in the swampy local terrain, which sold for as little as fifty cents an acre, to satisfy an expanding national market for Arkansas forest reserves. He also led the fundamental transformation of the landscape, involving the drainage of tens of thousands of acres of land, in order to create the vast agricultural empire he envisioned. A consummate manager, Wilson employed the tenancy and sharecropping system to his advantage while earning a reputation for fair treatment of laborers, a reputation—Whayne suggests—not entirely deserved. He cultivated a cadre of relatives and employees from whom he expected absolute devotion. Leveraging every asset during his life and often deeply in debt, Wilson saved his company from bankruptcy several times, leaving it to the next generation to successfully steer the business through the challenges of the 1930s and World War II. Delta Empire traces the transition from the labor-intensive sharecropping and tenancy system to the capital-intensive neo-plantations of the post–World War II era to the portfolio plantation model. Through Wilson’s story Whayne provides a compelling case study of strategic innovation and the changing economy of the South in the late nineteenth century.

Ecologists have long based their conceptual frameworks in the natural sciences. Recently, however, they have acknowledged that ecosystems cannot be understood without taking into account human interventions that may have taken place for thousands of years. And for their part, social scientists have recognized that human behavior must be understood in the environment in which it is acted out. Researchers have thus begun to develop the area of “human ecology.” Yet human ecology needs suitable conceptual frameworks to tie the human and natural together. In response, Cultural Values and Human Ecology uses the framework of cultural values to collect a set of highly diverse contributions to the field of human ecology. Values represent an important and essential aspect of the intellectual organization of a society, integrated into and ordained by the over-arching cosmological system, and constituting the meaningful basis for action, in terms of concreteness and abstraction of content as well as mutability and permanence. Because of this balance, values lend themselves to the kinds of analyses of ecological relationships conducted here, those that demand a reasonable amount of specificity as well as historical stability. The contributions to Cultural Values and Human Ecology are exceedingly diverse. They include abstract theoretical discussions and specific case studies, ranging across the landscape of Southeast Asia from the islands to southern China. They deal with hunting-gathering populations as well as peasants operating within contemporary nation-states, and they are the work of natural scientists, social scientists, and humanists of Western and Asian origin. Diversity in the backgrounds of the authors contributes most to the varied approaches to the theme of this volume, because differences in cultural background and academic tradition will lead to different research interests and to differences in the empirical approaches chosen to pursue given problems.
