Dan Jacobson retells the age-old, biblical story of the rape of King David's daughter by her brother Amnon. Out of this material he creates a tragic and sardonically humorous novel, wholly modern in spirit and yet true to the time in which it is set. On first publication, The Rape of Tamar was hailed as a masterpiece.

Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: 1,7, University of Edinburgh (School of Divinity), course: Old Testament 2, language: English, abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit thematisiert die Vergewaltigung Tamars durch ihren Halbbruder, wie sie in der Hebräischen Bibel 2 Sam 13:1-22 geschildert wird.

Now seen through the eyes of the young woman who became the unwilling catalyst to cruel events - incest, murder, and war, this is the controversial retelling of the epic of Absalom. Tamar, daughter of the famous King David, is raped by her half-brother. Although angered, David does nothing. Tamar's full-brother Absalom is outraged over the crime and the King's inaction. Absalom and his mother Makha plot revenge. While this turmoil unfolds, Bathsheba (David's most favored wife) quietly maneuvers to have her son Solomon inherit the throne, bypassing Absalom and the older brothers. Tamar loves her family above all others and is horrified to see her family's quarrel escalate out of control. She bravely struggles to prevent the clash from degenerating into civil war and undertakes a remarkable journey on foot to find the King. Her companion Hana accompanies her, disguised as a warrior to protect Tamar. But she cannot prevent the tragic denouement. As her world crumbles about her, Tamar keeps focus and has personal triumph in the end. After three thousand years, Tamar tells the story in her own words. The novel is an interesting study of two charismatic leaders who were themselves very flawed personalities, about the anguish within a family that was torn apart by their clash, and about a mother and daughter, whose love for each other is strained by their differing loyalties.

She describes specific forms of such violence and outlines appropriate pastoral responses. The second edition of this groundbreaking work is thoroughly updated and examines not only where the church has made progress since 1995 but also where women remain at unchanged or even greater risk of violence.

The Absence Of God In Biblical Rape Narratives written by Leah Rediger Schulte and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-15 with Religion categories.

In this groundbreaking work to identify and address God’s absence in three key rape narratives in the Hebrew Bible, Leah Rediger Schulte finds a pattern that indicates a larger community crisis. With a careful look at Genesis 34, Judges 19, and 2 Samuel 13, this study outlines God’s absence, a foreign presence, and a persistent problem that is resolved incorrectly to highlight consequences of the Israelites breaking their covenant with God. Using methodologies from literary criticism and gender studies and situating rape in its historical context, this volume makes distinctions between modern constructs of rape and biblical rape. Commentaries and studies on rape in the Bible often read a modern understanding of the victim and rapist back into the biblical text, missing how it would have been understood in ancient Israel. These biblical rape scenes are intimately connected to and assist in telling the story of Israel’s history as a people and their covenantal relationship with their deity.
