Imagine a world in which Darcy doesn't go to Ramsgate and thus doesn't stop Georgiana from running off and marrying Wickham. Renata McMann and Summer Hanford present "Poor Mr. Darcy: A Pride & Prejudice Novella," in which they examine how that single alteration changes the way Elizabeth's and Darcy's story unfolds, a tale that hinges on Mr. Darcy's performance as a poor Mr. Darcy. This "Pride and Prejudice" variation novella is approximately 44,000 words in length.

The Literary Agenda is a series of short polemical monographs about the importance of literature and of reading in the wider world and about the state of literary education inside schools and universities. The category of 'the literary' has always been contentious. What is clear, however, is how increasingly it is dismissed or is unrecognised as a way of thinking or an arena for thought. It is sceptically challenged from within, for example, by the sometimes rival claims of cultural history, contextualized explanation, or media studies. It is shaken from without by even greater pressures: by economic exigency and the severe social attitudes that can follow from it; by technological change that may leave the traditional forms of serious human communication looking merely antiquated. For just these reasons this is the right time for renewal, to start reinvigorated work into the meaning and value of literary reading. We live in days, no leaving them or choosing them. What's in a day? With their natural narrative arc they begin and they end, and in between we talk about how they are going or wonder 'where' they have gone. They each have their small stories, non-stories, ephemeral stories. So every day slips by, most days much like most other days. We eat, we sleep, we go to work; we endure, enjoy, continue. Day after day, day before day, it is the recurring of no particular story in endless, beginningless succession. At the same time, any single day is also a unique date, with its multi-digit identity, its moment-at last, and never again-of here and now, today. And on longer scales, the slow small shifts of ordinary days and their surrounding stories will eventually remake the days that have been and gone as the times that are no more. An ordinary day from decades, let alone centuries ago must now be a 'once' long passed away, the old days to be regretted-or to be revived in all the curiosity of their historical difference. Everyday Stories makes us think again about the ordinary life we are in, day after day and day by day: always the same, and always slightly changing. Entering into the single day, drawing out the stories that surround us, this book goes into everyday stories of many descriptions, old and new: both in literature and in that story-laden place and time we call real life.

When Mr. Collins arrives at Longbourn before the Meryton Assembly, his intentions towards Elizabeth Bennet are quite clear, and she wants nothing to do with marrying that odious man. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy is odious, too, of course. He’s a haughty man who has insulted her pride, but he is fending off his own unwanted romantic attentions in the form of a very determined Miss Caroline Bingley. So, when he proposes a mutually beneficial arrangement between himself and Elizabeth—pretending to be engaged in order to chase off their disagreeable prospective partners—she agrees. As part of the arrangement, Mr. Darcy claims he’ll help her find a real match and introduce her to a man who might truly align himself with someone of her status. When a man named Wickham arrives, claiming to be Mr. Darcy’s dear boyhood friend, she finds him positively perfect, exactly the sort of man she would want to marry. But, of course, Mr. Wickham isn’t at all what he seems. Dear reader, though this book has a number of light and amusing moments, the book also contains quite a bit of scandalous angst, disturbing revelations about characters’ pasts, and Mr. Wickham being, well, himself. Also, yes, after our dear couple marries, there are on-page lovemaking scenes of the detailed variety. Please be forewarned before reading.

There's no place for pride in this Austen misadventure. Chloe Parker was born two centuries too late. A thirty-nine-year- old divorced mother, she runs her own antique letterpress business, is a lifelong member of the Jane Austen Society, and gushes over everything Regency. But her business is failing, threatening her daughter's future. What's a lady to do? Why, audition for a Jane Austen-inspired TV show set in England, of course. What Chloe thinks is a documentary turns out to be a reality dating show set in 1812. Eight women are competing to snare Mr. Wrightman, the heir to a gorgeous estate, along with a $100,000 prize. So Chloe tosses her bonnet into the ring, hoping to transform from stressed-out Midwest mom to genteel American heiress and win the money. With no cell phones, indoor plumbing, or deodorant to be found, she must tighten her corset and flash some ankle to beat out women younger, more cutthroat, and less clumsy than herself. But the witty and dashing Mr. Wrightman proves to be a prize worth winning, even if it means the gloves are off...

The year is 1815, and Colonel Fitzwilliam is about to attend the Duchess of Richmond’s infamous ball, the night before the Battle of Waterloo. He finds himself bewitched by a masked strumpet, a woman who so captivates him he is driven to pay for her favors. It is only as she is rushing from him, after it is over, still masked, that he recognizes her. The woman he has just bedded is Elizabeth Bennet. But how can this be? Miss Bennet is dead. No one knows what became of her, years ago, when she and Miss Maria Lucas departed the rectory at Rosings, traveling post. Neither of the women were ever seen again. It has long been assumed that calamity met them, but here is evidence otherwise. No, Elizabeth Bennet is alive, and the colonel is certain there is one person who will wish to know, his cousin Mr. Darcy, who mourned the woman as if she were not some country miss who’d turned down his marriage proposal, but his soul mate. Mr. Darcy, who is lately married to the former Miss Anne de Bourgh. Yes, the colonel must tell his cousin, this he knows. It is only that he fears the news can bring nothing but misery to them all. Dear Reader, this variation is not for the faint of heart! The angst is overwhelming, the obstacles our dear couple faces are nearly insurmountable, and the past they have struggled against is painful, altering them both deeply—especially Elizabeth. But I promise you, if you venture within these pages, a happy ending awaits on the other side.
