This Reader's Bible series is capitalizing on a new type of Holy Bible that has become more popular over the last few years and one that is closer to the original than not. It dispenses with chapter and verse numbers (they weren't added until the 1200s), and puts the books that were originally together (1st and 2nd Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah, etc.) back into single books. This is not to say you should abandon your other Holy Bibles for this one. They all have a purpose, whether it is a study Bible, a reader's Bible, or any other type of Bible. We made this particular one at the size we did so it is easier to carry, easier to hold, and easier to read. We used a larger text size against cream-colored paper so it is easier to read outdoors in bright sunlight, as well as indoors at night under a single lamp. We split the Holy Bible up into five separate volumes, so it is easier to carry and you can bring just what you're currently reading instead of one large, bulky Bible.

The Minor Prophets are those dozen Old Testament books that, in the time of Jesus, were usually written on one scroll since they were all fairly brief. The late Elizabeth Achtemeier prepared the New International Biblical Commentary on the first six: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah. This second volume deals with the final six books. John Goldingay writes on Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, and Haggai; Pamela Scalise takes on the longest, Zechariah, and the last, Malachi. Like the authors of other volumes in the NIBC, Goldingay and Scalise utilize what is referred to as "believing criticism" when examining the biblical texts. Based on fidelity to critical analysis and sensitivity to the faith of both ancient and contemporary readers, this balanced approach enriches both the academy and the church. Following the series guidelines, the authors clearly explain the texts with additional notes regarding interpretation and "practical" reflection. For example, Goldingay issues a reminder that when the prophets spoke against the arrogance and sins of Assyria and Babylon, the Israelites needed to hear the word of God as a caution against their own pride and wickedness. He goes on to suggest that modern readers must remember, as well, that the same attitudes and actions that led to the downfall of these ancient Middle East empires can fall upon any and all who follow their example. The New International Biblical Commentary offers the best of contemporary scholarship in a format that both general readers and serious students can use with profit. Based on the widely used New International Version translation, the NIBC presents careful section-by-section exposition with key terms and phrases highlighted and all Hebrew transliterated. A separate section of notes at the close of each chapter provides additional textual, linguistic, cultural, and technical comments. Each commentary also includes a selected bibliography as well as Scripture and subject indexes.

The aim of this book is to present to readers, both Christian and non-Christian, the five rather different messages which the 'Minor Prophets' Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, and Malachi preached to their Israelite contemporaries, in the seventh to the fifth centuries BC, in the conviction that they are still very relevant to us today in the twenty-first century AD. The messages are very searching, because they relate to our conduct in daily life today, and speak of our spiritual destiny. They are also very revealing, since they speak both of God's interventions in the history of ancient Israel, and of His further plans for them and the whole world, probably in the near future. In some of them Christ is clearly predicted to hold the key to Israel's final blessing, while in others we can learn valuable lessons for Christian life and service. These messages are divinely-inspired to guide us safely through the dangers all around us today into the safety of God's heavenly harbour. To ignore them is disastrous.After a General Introduction, each book is introduced individually, then followed by a concise commentary on every chapter in it. The historical background of each is described, as is its outline analysis, but most is said concerning its main message for the original readers and for us today. Linguistic difficulties are considered fairly briefly to ascertain the meaning intended by the prophet, and several helpful more literal translations of the Scriptures are referred to, besides the AV/KJV, which is the base text followed.
