The field of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) traditionally required prerequisite skills; however, current literature debunks that myth and specifies that there are no specific skills required for the successful use of AAC. The AAC mantra is to presume competency; therefore, it is our due diligence to implement AAC to see if communication develops. Without a mode to communicate, individuals are restricted from communicating and participating in all aspects of life. Furthermore, new technology, such as the iPad, has brought enormous changes with access to AAC devices and systems. This study aimed at exploring California special education teachers’ knowledge, experience, and perceptions and their relationship with implementing AAC. This study was a mixed methods sequential explanatory design using survey questions and then conducted interviews of participants from the initial survey. The quantitative data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The qualitative data were collected from semi-open-ended questions which were themed and categorized to triangulate the results from the surveys.

Students identified with disabilities and complex communication needs (CCN) add a unique aspect to teaching practice and pedagogy. Both special education and general education teachers play a vital role in providing opportunities for students to learn and succeed. Using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices is one way for students with CCN to access the general curriculum as well as become active participants in the classroom. Research has indicated that teachers’ attitudes and self-efficacy using AAC may affect how well the devices are used in the classroom. Though teachers are expected to provide the necessary supports required by students with CCN, recent research shows they continue to have difficulty doing so. Given their role as primary communication partners for students with CCN, teachers’ confidence in their ability to provide services must be examined on a wider scale. The purpose of this quantitative, predictive, correlational study will be to determine if teachers’ self-efficacy can predict their intentions to use AAC in their classrooms and their perceptions of their students’ ability to communicate effectively as measured by subscales of the Teacher Attitudinal Scale toward AAC instrument (TASTA).

A majority of individuals with disabilities live in low and middle-income (LAMI) countries. These countries by definition are low in resources. Communication services for individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) are scarce. In addition, the number of qualified speech-language pathologists is inadequate to serve the needs of individuals with CCN. Under these conditions, training communication partners of individuals who have CCN is essential. To address this issue, the current study evaluated an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) training program designed for special education teachers living in a LAMI country. The training was based on four key practices identified when training in LAMI countries (Muttiah, McNaughton, & Drager, 2014), strategy instruction (Kent-Walsh & McNaughton, 2005), and principles of adult learning (Bryan, 2009). This investigation implemented an interrupted time-series design with nine teacher-student dyads. Special education teachers were taught to provide evocative communication opportunities (opportunities that place the child in an active role) that consisted of: (a) asking an open ended question, commenting, or making a choice; (b) providing a means for the student to respond; and, (c) waiting five sec for a response. Following the training all nine special education teachers increased the number of evocative communication opportunities provided to students with CCN. Additionally, all nine students with CCN increased the number of communication turns taken following their teachers participating in the training. The results of this study provide key information on training communication partners living in LAMI countries.

A high school multi-intensive special educator in Lafayette, Colorado reviewed 30 articles that study issues related to Augmentative and Alternative Communication and the student with severe disabilities. I classified each article by publication type (e.g., empirical study, descriptive paper, position paper, guide, review of the literature). Eight of the works were empirical studies. I classified each study by research design (e.g., qualitative methods, quantitative methods, mixed methods research). I then utlized a phenomenological method of data analysis to examine all 30 articles. Seven themes became apparent from my analysis of this body of literature: (a) AAC in American society: an historical overview; (b) ACC service providers; (c) implementation of AAC; (d) AAC teaching strategies; (e) family-centered and multicultural AAC; (f) the student with severe disabilities and AAC devices; and (g) AAC abandonment. I concluded with connecting the emergent themes with my role as a multi-intensive special educator, and I considered and reflected on my endeavor to teach and incorporate appropriate AAC in the lives of students with severe disabilities.
