When a bomb destroys the recently formed Special Irish Branch of Scotland Yard, all fingers point to the increasingly brazen factions of Irish dissidents seeking liberation from English rule. Volunteering their services to the British government, Barker and Llewelyn set out to infiltrate a secret cell of the Irish Republican Brotherhood known as the Invisibles. Posing as a reclusive German bomb maker and his anarchist apprentice, they are recruited for the group's ultimate plan: to bring London to its knees and end the monarchy forever. Their adventures take them from a lighthouse on the craggy coast of Wales to a Liverpool infested with radicals, and even to the City of Light, where Llewelyn goes undercover with Maire O'Casey, the alluring sister of an Irish radical. Llewelyn again finds himself put to the test by his enigmatic employer, studying the art of self-defense and the brutal sport of hurling -- and, most dangerous of all, being schooled in the deadly science of bomb making.

Reading and Teaching raises questions and provides a context for preservice and practicing teachers to understand and to reflect on the complex issues surrounding the teaching of reading in the schools. It presents real teachers in their classrooms, dialogues about that teaching, and exercises for further clarification. The purpose is to help teachers make informed choices about their teaching of reading. The text considers the different types of decisions teachers might make in the teaching of reading and the knowledge upon which they rely in making those decisions—not simply factual information about using certain materials and methods to teach reading, but also knowledge about the mind, the political climate, the broader social and cultural circumstances of their students and schools and the communities in which they teach. Reading and Teaching is designed to engage teachers in beginning to evolve their own practical theories, to help them explore and perhaps modify some basic beliefs and assumptions, and to become acquainted with other points of view. Readers are encouraged to interact with the text and to develop their own perspective on the teaching of reading. This is the fifth volume in Reflective Teaching and the Social Conditions of Schooling: A Series for Prospective and Practicing Teachers, edited by Daniel P. Liston and Kenneth M. Zeichner. It follows the same format as previous volumes in the series. *Part I includes four real-life cases of teachers’ experiences in the classroom: “Teaching Reading Via Direct Systematic Instruction”; “A New Teacher Learns About Teaching Reading and Culture”; “A Teacher-Constructed Whole Language Program”; and “Critical Literacy in an Urban Middle School.” Each case is followed by space for readers to write their own reactions and reflections, educators’ dialogue about the case, space for readers’ reactions to the educators’ dialogue, and a summary and additional questions. *Part II presents three public arguments representing different views about the teaching of reading: direct instruction, whole language, and critical literacy. *Part III offers the authors’ own interpretations of the issues raised throughout the text and some suggestions for further reflection. A list of resources is provided. This text is pertinent for all prospective and practicing teachers at any stage in their teaching careers. It can be used in any undergraduate or graduate course that addresses the teaching of reading.

The common practice of ability-grouped reading in UK schools, often termed guided reading, influences children’s sense of identity, feelings and progress as readers. Drawing on a rich ethnographic study of three primary classrooms, this book reopens a critical inquiry into ability-grouped reading that has been quiet since the 1990s, when guided reading in literacy education became established practice in the UK and the US. Through the lens of children’s agency in accommodating, resisting and at times transforming such reading pedagogy, the book shows how readers are shaped by ability-grouped reading and by the more egalitarian reading pedagogies introduced in the study. Children’s individual and collective experiences are brought to life through extended narratives that attend as closely to gesture, posture, visage, silences and prosody of speech as to spoken words. The book ends with a provocation: how literacy pedagogy might change if reflexive noticing and dismantling of hierarchies become the compass of pedagogical change. This demands attention to structural inequalities around race, gender and class and a turn towards deep listening to children. As well as being a valuable read for scholars of the sociology of childhood and education, it should appeal to anyone concerned with making education more equitable, including teachers, school leaders, parents, carers and policymakers.

The Zoroastrian Flame written by Sarah Stewart and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-16 with Art categories.

For many centuries, from the birth of the religion late in the second millennium BC to its influence on the Achaemenids and later adoption in the third century AD as the state religion of the Sasanian Empire, it enjoyed imperial patronage and profoundly shaped the culture of antiquity. The Magi of the New Testament most probably were Zoroastrian priests from the Iranian world, while the enigmatic figure of Zarathushtra (or Zoroaster) himself has exerted continual fascination in the West, influencing creative artists as diverse as Voltaire, Nietzsche, Mozart and Yeats. This authoritative volume brings together internationally recognised scholars to explore Zoroastrianism in all its rich complexity. Examining key themes such as history and modernity, tradition and scripture, art and architecture and minority status and religious identity, it places the modern Zoroastrians of Iran, and the Parsis of India, in their proper contexts. The book extends and complements the coverage of its companion volume, The Everlasting Flame.
