The cowboy, America’s most popular folk hero, appeals to millions of readers of novels, histories, biographies, and folk tales. Cowboys command a vast audience on country radio, television, and at the movies, but what exactly is a cowboy? Authors Joe B. Frantz and Julian Ernest Choate, Jr., reveal the real, dyed-in-the-wool cowboy as a heroic being from the American past, who richly deserves to be understood in terms of reality, instead of myth. Here, then, is the definitive portrait of the American cowboy—in frontier history and in literature—reexamined, revitalized, and set in the proper perspective. Many exciting accounts of cowboy life have been presented by such talented writers as J. Evetts Haley, J. Frank Dobie, Wayne Gard, Walter Prescott Webb, Edward Everett Dale, Helena Huntington Smith, Ramon F. Adams, and C. L. Sonnichsen. But Frantz and Choate see the cowboy in relation to the entire panorama of western history and as part of a continuing tradition: “The American cowboy has carved a niche—niche nothing, it’s a gorge—in American affection as a folk hero, and in this role we have surveyed him.” The American Cowboy: The Myth and the Reality is illustrated with sixteen pages of the great cowboy photographs made more than a century ago by Erwin E. Smith.

This book is about the real Old West. The research presented here comes from what I've found during my more than forty-five years of researching American history, but especially what I've learned in regards to the other side of the myths and legends of the Old West. In 2010, I started a blog, The American Cowboy Chronicles, to share what I've learned and celebrate the virtues of America. My articles on the Old West have never been meant to dispel the myths or attack legends but to simply explain what I've found after taking a hard look, an honest look, an objective look, at the evidence that's available. Since evidence proves or disproves what we've all been told about the Old West by Hollywood and writers who are not objective researchers, this is my attempt at taking a fresh look at Wyatt Earp, Tom Horn, and others. But mostly, this book is about why the American Cowboy became America's quintessential role model. This book looks at why the American Cowboy represents American toughness, independence, and resilience to the rest of the World.

The lives of American cowboys have been both real and mythic. This work explores cowboy music dress, humour, films and literature in sixteen essays and a bibliography. These essays demonstrate that the American cowboy is a knight of the road who, with a large hat, tall boots and a big gun, rode into legend and into the history books.

These stories represent a small portion of the life and times of a man who impacted a lot of people's lives, from family, neighbors, life long friends, and recent acquaintances. He has left his mark, whether it was in the mountains of Wyoming, the prairies of Nebraska, or a stretch of highway in South Dakota. They would not be what they are now, in part, for who he was. He saw the better part of a century - when the United States was coming into its own internationally, brought electricity to the country, and met with two of its greatest battles on its own turf. He has seen man go to depths in the ocean never before possible and soared to heights far into our galaxy. He has seen the development of television and computers and global positioning satellites. What an ever growing world his generation has left for us and what broad shoulders on which we are able to stand. This second edition reflects the editor's thoughts and sentiments after the death of his two grandparents and so puts a "final chapter" to close the book.

Philip Ashton Rollins's remarkable book is perhaps the most accurate and detailed description of the real-life American cowboy ever written. Here he describes the beginnings of ranching in America, and how horses and cattle were raised. He details, with flair and expertise, everything about the cowboy and his work -- his tools and weapons, his clothes and tack, the specialized skills he perfected, and the life he led while on the range. He explains that there was really no typical American cowboy and definitively separates fact from legend. A wonderful resource for anybody who lives or loves the cowboy life, this book is an incredible record of these men, their lives, and their work. - Back cover.

The Last American Cowboy written by Mike R. Dunbar and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-07 with Fiction categories.

This book details the story of a young man, a fictional character, Clem Barnett, during the late 1940's and 1950's, raised as a boy in the mid-west with dreams and visions, based on romantic books and movies, of being a cowboy in the West. He finds himself venturing far from his home in northeastern Oklahoma to hire-out on two very different ranches; first, one in Montana and later, one in Idaho. There, he learns about ranching, the cattle business, and most importantly, about life. He also learns what the modern, for the time period, cowboy is and how it differs greatly from his romantic vision. He faces many adventures and interacts with a host of colorful characters in search of his dreams. Because the story occurs in the early 1950's, the young man is faced with the horrors of participating in the Korean War, and more importantly, facing the emotional effects thereafter. Unlikely characters assist in his recovery and he gains respect and love for the people of the Basque culture who helped him. The story ends with a simple love story and a realization that dreams can be elusive. In the end, he finds peace and happiness and seems to come close to living the life of the romantic cowboy he envisioned. Others see in him a person who so loves the life of a cowboy and confers upon him the title of the last romantic, real life, American Cowboy.
